Greetings!

We spent this week perfecting our business financials and building on the knowledge given by last week's speakers. Profit and loss statements and balance sheets can be confusing, but are so important to a successful business.

Please join us at the First Mid-Illinois Bank and Trust corporate building located at 1421 Charleston Avenue in Mattoon. Contact me at jcdau@eiu.edu if you would like to visit the class so we can assist you upon entering the building.

Unique Hotel/Brickhouse Tour
with Dave Kirsch and Paul Mejdrich

A genuine thanks to general manager Dave Kirsch and food and beverage director Paul Mejdrich who gave us a tour of the beautifully renovated Unique Suites Hotel. Dave told us a little bit about the history of the hotel and the current renovations. After talking with Dave, we listened to Paul Mejdrich on what it takes to run a restaurant in Charleston; going over pricing, competition, staffing and creating a menu. After that, Paul gave us a tour of the Brickhouse restaurant .

Work Day

Wednesday we had another work day, this time going over start up expenses and profit and loss projections.

Book Review
with Gary Swearingen

This Thursday Colton and Michael gave us a summary of their books, "Total Money Makeover" by Dave Ramsey, and "Game On" by Emmitt Smith. Colton's book emphasized living below your means now, so you can live above them in the future. In Michael's book, Emmitt Smith thinks that it is important to put others before yourself and to save your talent and time for things that really matter. Gary Swearingen joined the class and shared his views about the books that he had recommended. He updated the class on the state of the markets and handed out microfiber screen cleaners to the students.

Startup Expense Reports
with Tiffany Kline, Katherine Johnson and Jason Tucker

On Friday the students received some expert advice on their financials from Tiffany, the BSC E-Coach, EIU student volunteer Katherine Johnson and First Mid-Illinois loan officer Jason Tucker.
