Greetings!
Dear (Contact First Name),

Although we celebrated President's Day on Monday and had a snow day on Friday, we still received plenty of lessons on financial projections and the benefits of outsourcing human resource functions this week. I was also very proud of the students who voluntarily attended a 3-hour class on starting a business hosted by the Business Solutions Center at Eastern Illinois University. They really want to learn!

Please join us at First Mid-Illinois Bank and Trust corporate building located at 1421 Charleston Avenue in Mattoon. Contact me at [email protected] if you would like to visit the class so we can assist you upon entering the building.

What the Banks Look For in Business Plans
with Calvin Schultz, First Mid-Illinois Bank & Trust

Tuesday we moved to our new location at the First Mid-Illinois Bank & Trust headquarters in Mattoon. It is here that Calvin Schultz came in and spoke about different types of loans that a business might need and what the bank reviews before lending. We learned how collateral and having a positive gross profit margin is very important.

First Mid-Illinois Bank and Trust has 38 banking centers in 25 communities and has $1.58 billioon in assets and $825 million in wealth management assets. They also own First Mid Insurance Group and Mid-Illinois Data Services, Inc.

Tour of Innovative Staff Solutions
with Nathan Meinhart, Wayne Meinhart and Kristy Kitterman

Innovative Staff Solutions was founded by Wayne Meinhart. His son, Nathan Meinhart, gave us a tour of the building and explained to us what their business does. Innovative Staff Solutions is a temporary work agency that researches and hires temporary workers for different employers who want both short term and long term employees for various jobs. Kristy Kitterman, Human Resources representative, spoke about the testing ad interview procedure with applicants. Wayne answered questons about his decision to start the business and explained how payroll, workers compensation and unemployment are the three largest line items in his business.

Balance Sheet
with Chris Swing and Ann Deters of Vantage Outsourcing

Chris Swing came in again on Thursday and was later joined by Ann Deters to teach us how to prepare a balance sheet. We learned how to classify assets, liabilities and owners equities and got a little more specific in defining direct and indirect costs. The class then split into groups and filled out a balance sheet and income statement based on a business simulation. Ann gave us a brief background about Vantage Outsourcing, a company that gives rural hospitals access to surgical equipment and experienced staff  so they can perform procedures locally without a huge capital expense.
