Dee Braden, host of the class for the second quarter, gave us an overview of all the services offered at the multi-generational LifeSpan Center. The LifeSpan Center is a wonderful Coles County resource that is the home to the Coles County Council on Aging and Dial-A-Ride as well as other programs. She discussed how they received federal tax dollars and combined those funds with private funding to create this space that includes a crafts room, banquet facilities, computer lab and even a movie theater.

City of Charleston Tour
With Scott Smith

Students learned about all aspects of running the city as they spoke with Scott Smith this week. It was impressive that the city has a $16 million dollar budget with more departments than the students could name. It is definitely run like a business with each department having their own budgets and goals. Scott Smith gave a wonderful concise overview of his job and discussed economic development tools that could help the small businesses.

Time Management

The students were asked what they would do if they had an extra hour each day. Exercise, sleep, play video games and researching businesses were the top picks. We discussed how to to get a hour more of productivity in a day by identifying tasks that are truly important. Planning, building relationships and taking care of yourself aren't always urgent, but they are definitely important and will help you accomplish your goals. This is the first class in a three part series on time management.
