Terrapin Station Winery
Greetings!

Wow, it's almost Labor Day, harvesting is in full swing and the Fall festival season is upon us. 2012 has been a great vintage so far - our yields are down but the fruit quality is awesome. We are so excited about our Cayuga, for example, that we are thinking of adding a drier, bottled Cayuga to our lineup to complement our popular boxed version.

With the Fall, our tasting room hours drop back to being open Saturdays and Sundays from 12-6 PM. We will be open Labor Day Weekend Friday through Sunday 12-6 and Labor Day 12-4, with Box Turtle Bob providing live entertainment this Friday from 4-6.

We have two Festivals in September: the Port Deposit Food and Wine Festival on September 8 and the oldest wine festival on the East Coast, the Maryland Wine Festival, on September 15 and 16.

And finally, our second annual Market Day at Terrapin Station Winery is September 22, with crafts, food, music and wine, of course!

We are still looking for vendors for this event. For information, please download our vendor application here.

Also note: on event days such as this, our entrance will move to where our sign is on MD 213. Take a left at the intersection of Ricketts Mill Road and MD 213 and the entrance will be a few hundred yards on the left. This is our future planned entrance!

Medal Winning Wines
How does that work?

You see it all the time: "Our wine has won 345 gold medals." But what does that really mean? Are some medals better than others?

Well, like most things at TSW we like to dispel myths and tell it like it really is in the wine business. But there is no simple answer here!

First, wineries like ours get invited to enter competitions all the time: there are literally hundreds of them. We try to select ones with good panels and good methods, and we prefer international competitions so that our wines are judged against a much larger base of wines. And honestly, we just don't get around to entering competitions as often as we should! Over the last few years we have submitted wines to three well-known competitions: the Lone Star International, the Indy International and the Finger Lakes International, and won medals for our Cayuga, Shiraz and Reserve Traminette. We plan to enter more of these competitions, especially as the quality of our vintages continue to improve.

We do get asked "Why aren't your wines showing up in the Maryland Governor's Cup Competition?" Quite simply because we stopped entering them. It is a fine competition, but we want to measure ourselves against a broader base in order to establish a recognizable reputation not just in Maryland, but around the country and the world.

At the end of the day, the most important competition is the one we try to win every day, in our tasting room, with our customers. We want you to like our wines not because a competition told you it was good, but because YOU thought they were good!
Hope to share a glass with you soon. Enjoy the Fall and a great harvest!
