United Performing Arts Fund News
As the old saying goes, "April showers bring May flowers," and while Milwaukee is certainly getting plenty of rain, the skies are bright at UPAF as we transition into spring. We're now more than halfway to our $11 million campaign goal - due in large part to successful Workplace Giving Campaigns, UPAF's sweet spot. However, we cannot relax just yet since we have a great deal to do in the next six weeks.
Speaking of UPAF's sweet spot, we are pleased to recognize the following organizations for agreeing to host their own Workplace Giving Campaigns:
- Andrus, Sceales, Starke & Sawall
- ASQ
- Crisis Prevention Center
- Enterforce
- First Business Bank
- Galanis Pollack & Jacobs
- Holter Financial Group
- Hupy & Abraham
- Marietta Investments
- Milwaukee Center for Independence (MCFI)
- Mortara Instruments
- Northwestern Mutual Financial Network
- Penfield Children's Center
- STIR Advertising
- The Previant Law Firm, S.C.
If your organization is interested in hosting a Workplace Giving Campaign, please email Natalie Glumm at nglumm@upaf.org. Workplace Giving Campaigns not only help ensure a strong performing arts scene, they also benefit the organization. We know that:
- Employees want to live and work in a vibrant community.
- The arts help you build market share, enhance your brand and reach new customers.
- The arts help build creativity in your employees.
- The arts help you get our message across in engaging ways.
- The arts challenge employees to be their best.
- The arts are a great way to show you appreciate your employees.
- The arts create an environment that blends backgrounds, ethnicities and cultures.
- When you partner with local arts, you partner with the whole city.
It is truly unbelievable that it has been a month since the UPAF Campaign Kickoff. If you were unable to attend the event - or would like to re-live the experience - just click on the link below to see a video. Thanks again to our six Cornerstone Groups for putting on a wonderful, first-of-its-kind rendition of Romeo and Juliet. Be sure to check out photos of the performance and monitor campaign progress on the UPAF Facebook page.

Member Spotlight: Present Music
Judgment of Midas
Judgment of Midas takes as its starting point a series of mythical musical contests said to have taken place on Mount Tmolus, near Sardis, Turkey, between the two gods Pan and Apollo and witnessed by King Midas. According to Ovid's Metamorphoses, the singing contest is between Pan, maker of "street" music-music of the people-and Apollo, maker of the Gods' music-the spiritual or "high" music. The opera's musical language will exploit popular, ethnic and folk musical styles side-by-side with serious music of epic proportions, effecting a vivid blaze of musical contrast. Kamran Ince's compositional style naturally synthesizes folk instruments into the traditional Western orchestra and is well-suited to portraying the pleasures of the musical contest at hand. The drama unfolds amid a wonderland of sound made even more magical by the brilliant interplay of vivid musical color and contrast.
Performance Information:
Friday and Saturday, April 12 and 13 - 7:30 p.m.
Helene Zelazo Center for the Arts
2419 Kenwood Blvd., Milwaukee

UPAF Affinity Programs Leaping to New Levels
Next Generation UPAF, sponsored by We Energies, a donor affinity program for young professionals 45 and under looking to support the performing arts, is growing at a record pace this year. Just 30 days into the 2013 Campaign, Next Gen has added more than 100 new members. The recent success is due in large part to corporate partners like Northwestern Mutual, Johnson Controls and Badger Meter, who recognize the value programs like Next Generation UPAF provide their employees by helping them broaden their networks, engage in the community and strengthen their leadership skills. Also growing by leaps and bounds is UPAF Notable Women, sponsored by BMO Harris Bank. Established in 2011, UPAF Notable Women is focused on addressing the serious decline of arts programming in the public schools. Since the 2013 Campaign Kickoff in mid-March, Notable Women membership has grown by 40 women who are committed to ensuring that all of our region's children have access to arts education. We thank all of these individuals for their generosity in supporting the performing arts in Southeastern Wisconsin. If you would like additional information on becoming a member of Next Generation UPAF or UPAF Notable Women, contact Vanessa Nerbun, senior development director, at vnerbun@upaf.org or 414-239-6266.
