United Performing Arts Fund News
Deanna Tillisch

December, the "coda" of the calendar year, has arrived, and in just a couple of weeks the beautiful sonata called 2012 will come to a close. This time of year is filled with energy and excitement throughout the community. People of all ages are enjoying a variety of heartwarming and enriching holiday entertainment - delivered with excellence by our Member Groups and Affiliate Groups. Don't forget to use your UPAF smART card for eligible shows.

"UPAF staff enjoy Next Act Theatre's It's a Wonderful Life Live Radio Show."

UPAF is pleased to introduce two new team members, Don Jones, director of development, and Megan Bauman, development coordinator. Don, who most recently served as a loaned executive for United Way, brings years of both development and sales experience. New to town, Megan recently worked at the Chicago Conservation Center. And, we bid Meghan Baskett, our former development coordinator, a fond farewell as she begins a new chapter in Denver, Colorado.

So as the end of the year approaches, I extend my thanks to YOU for helping UPAF achieve much success in 2012. Everyone on the UPAF team wishes you a very happy holiday season filled with family, fun, festivities and of course, the performing arts!

Tax Season Follows the Holiday Season!

Remember UPAF in your 2012 year-end charitable giving

The Bush-era tax cuts, enacted in 2001 and 2003 and extended in 2010, are set to expire on December 31, 2012 - unless Congress takes action before that date.

If the cuts expire, many taxpayers may face higher tax rates on ordinary income, dividends, capital gains, gifts and estates; as well as see the return of itemized deduction phase-outs, among other changes.

As you determine your approach to giving this year, keep in mind that this year's rules on tax treatment are certain, but 2013 may not be so clear. Consider a donation to the United Performing Arts Fund.

Donate

Four philanthropic strategies to consider this year-end

- Increase donations this year in case itemized deductions become limited in 2013.

- Donate appreciated securities to eliminate the need to pay higher capital gains taxes.

- Take more income now - and make an offsetting charitable contribution - before a possible income tax increase.

- Build flexibility into charitable trusts to prepare for rising estate tax rates.

As always, consult your tax advisor to find out what approach may be best for you. To make a contribution, click the "Donate Now" link or contact Penny Gutekunst at (414)-270-4494 or pgutekunst@upaf.org
