Bullying -
Making a Difference
By Marilyn Morris, President

Think back to when your children were two-year-olds.  No doubt, you took a great deal of time, energy and effort  to teach each of your children to be nice and share.  Perhaps that's when you first grasped the concept that being nice and sharing are not inborn traits, but something that must be instilled by parents and caring adults.

Fast forward to today and sadly we see young people growing up in a society where lines between right and wrong, good and bad are severely blurred.  Sarcasm and put downs are a way of life and positive role models seem almost non-existent.  As a result, many kids, even good kids from good homes have become complacent and see nothing wrong with sitting back and doing absolutely nothing while bullies take pleasure in mistreating others.  So, just as parents must teach their toddlers to be nice and share, we must teach our school-aged children:
It's NEVER okay to be mean or
sit back and watch while others are mistreated.

In our presentations, students learn about the four major characters associated with bullying.  First, there's the Bully.  This is the person who makes life miserable for others day in and day out.  Now, if there's a bully, there will also be those who are bullied;  we call these students the Target.

Then there are the students who consider themselves Innocent Bystanders.  The large majority of students in schools fall in this category.  Strangely, they tend to think they have absolutely nothing to do with bullying.  After all, they're neither the bully nor the one being bullied.  But in truth, they play a major role in this destructive lifestyle...(click here to continue)

Dating Violence

The idea that - "It's Never Okay to be Mean" desperately needs to include dating relationships as seen in a federally-sponsored survey that was released last Thursday, October 23rd.  The survey indicated nearly 20% of boys and girls reported themselves as victims of physical and sexual abuse in dating relationships and more than 60% of both genders reported being victims and perpetrators of psychological abuse, broadly defined as actions ranging from name-calling to excessive tracking of a victim(click here to read more)
