Important Info on Oral Sex

By Marilyn Morris, Founder / President

Here's a great opening line for tonight's dinnertime conversation with your teenagers and college aged children.

Did you know people are getting cancer in their mouth and throat from oral sex?  (Pause...)  In fact, the medical profession is so intent on getting this information out they've declared this week (April 20th-26th) as "Oral, Head and Neck Cancer Awareness Week".

Actually, the same type of cancer that causes cervical cancer in women is now causing most of the cancer in people's mouths, tonsils, tongues and throats.  The culprit is a sexually transmitted disease called Human Papilloma Virus or HPV.  This also happens to be the most common STD among American teenagers.  So how does an STD commonly found in the sexual area of a person's body end up in a person's mouth?

Little Known Facts about HPV

  • HPV is the most common Sexually Transmitted Disease (STD) in America.
  • About 79 million Americans are currently infected, and about 14 million new infections occur every year.
  • Most HPV infections go away on their own without causing health problems.  Others can remain for years or a lifetime.
  • HPV is spread through vaginal, anal, oral sex or through skin-to-skin sexual contact.  In other words, it's not necessary to go all the way to become infected with HPV.
  • In most cases, HPV spreads invisibly.  Therefore, most people don't know they're infected.
  • HPV can cause genital warts and cancer.
  • The types of HPV that cause cancer usually have no symptoms until it's in the advanced stages.
  • To prevent complications of HPV, women are encouraged to get a routine Pap test.
  • There are no HPV tests for men.  Therefore, men serve as a silent carrier of HPV.
  • Virtually all cervical cancer in women is caused by HPV.
  • About 40% of penile cancer in men is caused by HPV.
  • Men and women engaging in anal sex can get anal cancer from HPV.  About 90% of anal cancer is cause by HPV.
  • Men and women engaging in oral sex can get cancer of the mouth, throat, tonsils and tongue.  The majority of all mouth and throat cancers are caused by HPV.
  • Having more than one lifetime sexual partner increases the risk of cancer-causing HPV.
  • Condoms may offer some protection IF the infected area is covered by the condom.
  • The HPV vaccine can also help reduce the risk of HPV.
