A Life Lesson

with a Strong Message

By Marilyn Morris

Founder/President Aim for Success

After watching Snitch - starring Dwayne (The Rock) Johnson, Susan Sarandon and Benjamin Bratt (Rey Curtis from Law and Order), I thought, "Wow!  This could be a good movie for teenagers and parents to watch together."

The movie is based on a true story and provides a resounding message about the dangers of drugs.  But this isn't the typical story of some drug-crazed, wild kid, but rather a normal teenage boy who is curious to know how it feels to take Ecstasy.

Family Dinner's Impact on

Smoking, Drinking and Drugs

Teens who only eat dinner with their family once or twice a week are almost four times likelier to use tobacco;  more than twice as likely to use alcohol;  two-and-a-half times likelier to use marijuana;  and almost four times likelier to say they expect to try drugs in the future when compared to teens who eat with their family five or more times a week.

Three Helpful Hints

1. Know Your Child's Friends.

The most significant indicator of drug use is your child's friends. Teens who hang-out with drug users typically use drugs.

 2. Support Your Child's Activities.

Young people who are busy with sports, drama, clubs, music or other healthy social activities are far less likely to get involved with drugs.

3. Take a Stand Against Drug Use.

Various studies have indicated when parents disapprove of certain behaviors their children are less likely to engage in that activity.
