What Parents and Teens

Need to Know

By Marilyn Morris

Founder/President Aim for Success

For well over 50 years, antibiotics have been known as the miracle drug. But as we've often heard, all good things must come to an end.  Unfortunately, the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and the World Health Organization (WHO) have been warning us for years that a day is coming when antibiotics will be a thing of the past.  In fact last year, Margaret Chan, the head of the WHO sounded the alarm when she said, "The problem is simple to grasp.  In the past 25 years, bacteria have become increasingly immune to the antibiotics in our medical arsenal.  Now the cupboard is nearly bare."

Gonorrhea is just one of the many bacterial infections that have outsmarted one antibiotic after another. The current class of antibiotics being used to fight off gonorrhea is cephalosporin.

Over the past few years, the CDC has been warning Americans this current line of defense is the last line of defense. Once these antibiotics stop working, that's it...there are no more antibiotics waiting in the wings to cure gonorrhea.

Antibiotic resistant strains of gonorrhea have been showing up over the past few years in various parts of the world.  Then on January 9, 2013, the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) announced this "superbug" form of gonorrhea has now hit North America.

Speaking Engagements Are Up!

Good news for Aim for Success:

Our speaking engagements are well above the past few years.

Bad news for our customers:

Our spring calendar is filling fast. Therefore, we highly recommend you book your spring programs now. Every week you wait, the harder it will be to find the dates you want.

Recent Student Comments:

Sometimes the comments from students can break your heart -

The teen dating violence part was an eye opener because I am getting out of an abusive relationship and he had all the red flags you talked about. Thanks. 16-yr-old girl

It does hurt to lose the person after you've had sex. In my case, I got pregnant. He left me and a few weeks later I lost my baby. He came back, but I told him never again. It still hurts. 17-yr-old girl

Some people think a break up after sex only hurts girls, but that's not true. 16-yr-old guy

Other times they are very encouraging -

I think the program is good. It has good info and it makes me want to save sex for marriage. 11-yr-old guy

This program has helped me realize what I want to do is save sex and accomplish my goals.  12-yr-old girl

I'm talking to my boyfriend this weekend and we're going to set boundaries. Thanks!  15-yr-old girl
