Red Ribbon Week
October 23rd - 31st
Make the Most
of an Opportunity
By Marilyn Morris
President of Aim For Success
Stories from the local, state and national news can make for great dinnertime conversation, as well as valuable teaching tools. For example, the big news across the college football world this past week was the story of the TCU quarterback being arrested for drunk driving in the early hours of Thursday morning before the TCU / Iowa State game. Casey Pachall had made quite a name for himself last year as a sophomore by starting all 13 games. This year he has accumulated an impressive 948 passing yards and 10 touchdowns. Last week TCU was reveling in their impressive 12 game winning streak and their ranking of 15th in the nation. But that was before Casey Pachall got drunk. When Casey Pachall was arrested for drunk driving, all the excitement from national recognition came to a screeching halt. Casey's decision to drink alcohol on Wednesday night before the Iowa State game resulted in devastating consequences. CLICK HERE TO READ MORE

What Kids Wish
Their Parents Had Done
Listen to what kids who have been in rehab say they wish their parents had done to help prevent their nightmare of addiction.
- When I never brought friends home, you should have seen that as a red flag. I knew if you saw my friends you would know I was into drugs.
- Had you checked my cell phone regularly, you would have seen the names of my drug dealers. Of course I tried to hide or change their names so you wouldn't catch on - but if you had been paying attention, you would have seen through my cleaver plan. CLICK HERE TO READ MORE

Parents Need to Remember... Thanks to Modern Technology, drugs are at your child's finger tips. - The cell phone is used to call drug dealers with the press of a button.
- The Internet is used to buy drugs, learn how to use and make drugs.
- IM, FB and MySpace are used to share experiences, learn where to get the best deal on drugs and meet new friends to share drugs and find new drug dealers.

Drug Prevention Presentation
Aim For Success has a great drug prevention presentation, POWER TO SUCCEED, for 5th - 12th graders. This program is packed with stories, fun activities and object lessons that help students understand the pain of addiction and the dangers of tobacco, alcohol, marijuana and prescription drugs.
See what a counselor had to say at the conclusion of this program:
"On October 28th, 2011, our school had the opportunity to hear the Power to Succeed program. The students were engaged in the program and gave the program glowing reviews. Some of the students even said it was the best Drug Prevention program our school has brought in during Red Ribbon Week. I felt this was quite a compliment as we have offered programs such as power weight-lifters, dance teams, and BMX groups to talk during Red Ribbon week. The students said the Power to Succeed program provided them with a lot of useful information on the effects of drugs and alcohol and it was fun." Sherice Farha, School Counselor at Griffin MS in Frisco, TX
