K8 Corner

Welcome Back K-8 Students!

We hope that you had a great summer break.  We are looking forward to a great year in our K-8 department, and we have been so excited to see all the returning students as well as meet our new students who have recently enrolled.  We have been busy getting back into the swing of things, and we hope that the first few weeks have been going well for you.

Please remember that if your student is interested in attending one of the weekly classroom options he or she will need to sign up with his or her supervisory teacher.  The classes do fill up quickly, and we want to make sure your student gets a spot.  We are also offering the cooking and crafts class this year free of charge.  Families can sign up for it in the front office the week before the class is offered.

Students in grades two through eight should have taken the Star Renaissance tests after enrollment.  The supervisory teacher will have the scores for the test and families will be receiving them at check in appointments.  Please contact your supervisory teacher with any questions.

Please make sure that your student is logging on and completing Study Island for at least 30 minutes per day.  Reading should be done for 15 minutes and math should be done for 15 minutes as well.  Please seek assistance from your supervisory teacher if you do not have a user name or password or if your user name and password are not working.  Study Island will be part of the effort grade this year.

SAFETY AT PVCS
Providing for our students' safety is a major responsibility of the PVCS staff. We are prepared to make prompt and responsible decisions to protect and create a safe environment for our students. The need to lockdown, shelter-in-place, evacuate students, or close school before the regularly scheduled closing time could arise from a relatively minor emergency, such as, a prolonged interruption of power.
During the school year your child will be trained in the necessary emergency procedures. Our students learn how to react, where to assemble, and what to expect in an emergency situation.
We suggest that you meet with your immediate family and develop an emergency plan. There are several free publications available to assist you. Please call the local chapter of the American Red Cross (858) 309-1200 or visit them online at sdarc.org. Additionally, more information can be found at www.fema.org.
Here at Pacific View, we look forward to a safe and fun-filled year of learning. If you have any questions or comments regarding emergency preparations, please call the school office at (760) 757-0161.

Teacher's Corner
When I think back to my years in elementary and middle school I remember how much fun I had.  My favorite times were spent in classes with my good friends and engaging in a little friendly competition during PE and recess time.  I wanted to give our students a chance to build those kinds of memories at Pacific View Charter School, so I turned to DonorsChoose.Org to help.

Donors Choose is an online charity which allows teachers across the nation to post project requests.  This makes it easy for anyone to donate to the project in order to help students. The site was started by a former teacher and aims to assist teachers in obtaining materials necessary to ensure that children in every community have the resources necessary for a great education.

I recently posted several projects on the site with a request for various materials to be used during recess.  As your students may have shared, our jump ropes, footballs, and Frisbees have seen better days.  Our K-8 team decided it was time for some new additions to the recess and classroom materials.  With the VERY GENEROUS donations from many of my friends and family members along with donors I do not personally know, a foundation called the Girard Foundation, and the board members of Donors Choose we were able to fully fund all projects.

In the upcoming school year our students will have the opportunity to use the following donated items thanks to the fully funded projects on Donors Choose:

-2 footballs
-2 soccer balls
-2 portable soccer nets
-4 rubber handballs of various sizes
-1 set up golf putt cups
-1 large set of golf putts
-1 short set of golf putts
-1 ball pump (for teacher use)
-1 set of ball inflating needles (for teacher use)
-1 small adjustable basketball hoop
-2 additional small basketballs
-1 small portable table tennis table
-6 extra table tennis paddles
-1 dozen extra table tennis balls
- 1 electronic Keyboard with stand, pedal and bench
-various craft products

I am so excited for our students to come back to school and be able to utilize the donated items!  I am overwhelmed by the generosity of my family and friends and am thrilled to know that Pacific View Charter School can benefit from their kindness.  We will definitely be busy making some thank you cards next year in class to send to these amazing donors.  See you soon!
