Leapfrog releases its final report on the 2014 Leapfrog Hospital Survey
Last year, just over 1,500 U.S. hospitals voluntarily completed the Leapfrog Hospital Survey, the highest recorded participation to date. Because of their commitment to transparency, patients and purchasers have the information they need to make the best decisions for their care.
- One in five hospitals won't commit to apologizing and waiving all costs associated with a "Never Event."
- One in six hospitals have too many central line infections.
- Urban hospitals continue to outperform rural hospitals on the Leapfrog Safe Practices standard.

Finding the Best Surgeon Just Got Easier
Two tools are released to help consumers make the best choice
If you or a family member needs surgery, you have two big decisions to make:
1. What's the safest hospital?
2. Who's the best surgeon?
We've got the first question covered with the Hospital Safety Score, but until now, it's been almost impossible to compare the performance of individual surgeons.
But last week, two different organizations released free, user-friendly tools that are moving us in the right direction. The Consumers' Checkbook tool identifies the top performers for 14 different surgeries, using a star ratings system. ProPublica calls out the best and worst performers in their tool for eight different procedures.
What the experts say: "Asking whether this report card will have unintended consequences isn't the right question. The right question is - will it leave Bobby better off? I think it will." - Ashish Jha, M.D.

Founded in 2000 by large employers and other purchasers, The Leapfrog Group is a national nonprofit organization driving a movement for giant leaps forward in the quality and safety of American health care. The flagship Leapfrog Hospital Survey collects and transparently reports hospital performance, empowering purchasers to find the highest-value care and giving consumers the lifesaving information they need to make informed decisions. The Hospital Safety Score, Leapfrog's other main initiative, assigns letter grades to hospitals based on their record of patient safety, helping consumers protect themselves and their families from errors, injuries, accidents, and infections.
