Easy-to-use Toolkit helps employers protect their employees and save on the bottom line

Employers and other purchasers pay an average of $8,000 per hospital admission for errors, injuries, accidents and infections. But that number can be significantly reduced - and purchasers can save lives in the process.

Our new Hospital Safety Score Purchaser Toolkit features our Hidden Surcharge Calculatorrecently awarded a Certificate of Validation from The Care Innovations™ Validation Institute, an initiative of GE and Intel. Other resources include "plug-and-play" template letters, newsletter articles, our new patient safety whiteboard videos, and even sample tweets.

The Toolkit also features a section on how to apply leverage in your community to increase accountability and transparency in your local hospitals.

Leah Binder's piece "Don't Bother Complaining About High-Deductible Health Plans" was just published in Harvard Business Review. Included in her article:

"High-Deductible Health Plans (HDHPs) have unleashed forces that will compel stakeholders to adjust to new realities...Hospitals will need to incorporate pricing into conversations with patients about treatment options. And price-conscious patients, questioning the expensive inefficiencies that are rampant in health care, will not tolerate absurdly opaque and confusing hospitals bills for much longer."

The Fall 2014 update to the Hospital Safety Score has been released at www.hospitalsafetyscore.org

The Hospital Safety Score assigns A, B, C, D and F grades to more than 2,500 general hospitals nationwide based entirely on their ability to prevent errors, injuries, accidents, and infections. The Hospital Safety Score is calculated by top patient safety experts, peer-reviewed, fully transparent and free to the public.

The Hospital Safety Score can tell you more about things like:

  • How well does my hospital prevent infections and encourage handwashing?
  • Does my hospital value patient safety by supporting strong healthcare teams?
  • Are there protocols and standards in place for preventing errors?
December 31st last date to submit 2014 Survey

December 31, 2014 is the deadline for the 2014 Leapfrog Hospital Survey and CPOE Evaluation Tool. Hospitals that would like Leapfrog Hospital Survey Results used in the Spring 2015 Hospital Safety Score must submit a 2014 Leapfrog Hospital Survey and CPOE Evaluation Tool by December 31, 2014.

Leapfrog's Annual Meeting
December 2: Arlington, VA

Register now for Leapfrog's Annual Meeting - Beyond Partisanship: Strategies for Fast Improvement in American Healthcare. Leapfrog Top Hospital Awards will be given to the highest performing hospitals on the Leapfrog Hospital Survey.

The Leapfrog Group is a coalition of public and private purchasers of employee health benefits founded a decade ago to work for improvements in healthcare safety, quality, and affordability. Leapfrog purchaser members use hospital survey results in contracting, open enrollment with their employees and other public reporting, benefits design, and value-based purchasing programs.  The Leapfrog Hospital Survey focuses on three critical areas of patient safety and quality: how patients fare, which includes issues like mortality for common high-risk surgeries and procedures; resources used to care for patients measured by length of stay and readmission rates; and management practices that promote safety and quality, such as adopting computerized physician order entry to reduce medication errors.
