SurveyReport of the 2013 Leapfrog Hospital Survey
Comprehensive analysis from Castlight® Health reveals the state of U.S. hospital care

The Leapfrog Group has issued the Results of 2013 Leapfrog Hospital Survey, an in-depth examination of seven key areas of hospital quality and safety: medication errors, maternity care, high-risk surgeries, Intensive Care Unit (ICU) physician staffing, serious adverse events, safety practices, and hospital-acquired conditions (HACs) - including infections in ICUs, pressure ulcers, and injuries. The report, prepared by Castlight® Health, is based on hospital performance data gathered through the Leapfrog Hospital Survey of 1,437 U.S. hospitals in 2013, the highest hospital participation rate to date in the annual survey.

A press release announcing the report was issued on July 18th. The report is also accompanied by an Executive Summary and slide deck of key charts from the report available for download.

Survey2014 Leapfrog Hospital Survey
First results to be posted July 25th; Desk Review has begun

The first set of results for the 2014 Leapfrog Hospital Survey will be posted on www.LeapfrogGroup.org/CP on Friday, July 25th. All hospitals that reported to the survey by June 30, 2014 will have their data reported. Hospitals that did not respond by June 30th will be publicly reported as "Declined to Respond." Hospitals can continue to update their surveys or submit a new survey through the end of the calendar year. Survey results are updated on the public reporting website during the first five business days of each month.

Hospitals should also be aware that Leapfrog's desk review process has begun. All hospital responses are assessed using empirically driven, normative data quality standards. The data quality thresholds are constructed with both high and low benchmarks of acceptability, and are determined from both external data sources and historical Leapfrog Hospital Survey data. Hospitals will be notified via email from the Help Desk if one or more of their survey responses has been flagged for the desk review. Hospitals will need to follow up with supporting evidence or documentation as requested via email to the Help Desk.

SurveyUpcoming Hospital Safety Score Deadline
August 31st Snapshot Date Approaching

Hospitals should be aware that the Data Snapshot Date for the Fall 2014 Hospital Safety Score is August 31st. On that date, Leapfrog will pull down publicly available data from all data sources used to calculate the score, including the Leapfrog Hospital Survey, CMS, and the American Hospital Association's annual survey. Hospitals that would like Leapfrog data included in the calculation of their fall safety score must complete a Leapfrog Hospital Survey by August 31st. For more information, please visit our website

Leapfrog speaks out against removal of Never Events from CMS public reporting

CMS has confirmed their intention to remove eight hospital-acquired condition (HAC) measures (i.e. rate of foreign object retained, rate of air embolism, rate of pressure ulcers, rate of falls and trauma, among others) from the public domain, both Hospital Compare and data.medicare.gov.  Leapfrog had advocated strongly to maintain these measures. The measures provide important, easy to understand information about a hospital's safety record to patients.

Leapfrog is aggressively pursuing an advocacy agenda with CMS to restore these measures, as well as investigating alternative methods of calculating the HACs used in the Hospital Safety Score. Hospitals will be alerted of any potential changes to the Hospital Safety Score methodology with considerable advance notice.

The Leapfrog Group is a coalition of public and private purchasers of employee health benefits founded a decade ago to work for improvements in healthcare safety, quality, and affordability. Leapfrog purchaser members use hospital survey results in contracting, open enrollment with their employees and other public reporting, benefits design, and value-based purchasing programs.  The Leapfrog Hospital Survey focuses on three critical areas of patient safety and quality: how patients fare, which includes issues like mortality for common high-risk surgeries and procedures; resources used to care for patients measured by length of stay and readmission rates; and management practices that promote safety and quality, such as adopting computerized physician order entry to reduce medication errors.
