About Thanksgiving.... We know how very much we have to be thankful for. At the same time, we look around at all the pain and chaos in the world; at all the difficulties both internal and external with which people struggle, and it reminds us of the importance of compassion...of realizing that everyone has sorrow and struggle in their lives.

President John F Kennedy said this in his 1963 Thanksgiving Day Proclamation:

"As we express our gratitude, we must never forget that the highest appreciation is not to utter words, but to live by them."

A good goal.

Happy Thanksgiving!

Loretta Eby Glass

Loretta Eby received her BFA in Glass, with minors in Printmaking and Drawing, from the Cleveland Institute of Art, Cleveland, OH in 1981.

"I've been making art my whole life, but I haven't drawn pictures since I found glass," said Eby, who earned a scholarship to the institute to study illustration.

"I enjoy the Zen of the process. I'm only as good as my ability to use my tools. When the furnace is at 2,000 degrees, there's no way you can touch the glass, so my work with my tools is critical - in glassblowing, gravity is your friend."

She continued her education in glass at the Penland School of Crafts, as well as at Haystack Mountain School of Crafts, and the Pilchuck School of Glass.

Oil Lamp

Loretta finds inspiration in the oddest of places. Her idea of a good time is finding a new junkyard or farm equipment salvage lot: "It's way more fun than mall shopping." In places such as those, she finds "art parts," shapes, textures, and even discarded tools that are assembled into striking combinations with her glass.

Oyster Knives!
In August of 1976, Mark Hazen started his career as a custom knife maker.  At that time,  he could not afford to purchase a custom knife, so he decided to make his own.   That's when it all began.  Initially, Mark made knives for his friends and eventually, his creative talent was sought after by customers throughout the USA.  After 30 years as a renowned knife maker, Mark decided to retire in 2007.  On September 23, 2013, he received a call from Colonel Jack Tobin, president of The Special Forces Association at Fort Bragg, NC.  While at an estate auction preview, Colonel Tobin saw a knife which he felt  would be perfect for Special Forces active duty personnel, as well as the members of the association.  Mark came out of retirement and began his journey by making a knife in honor of his fallen friend, MSG Robert Horrigan, a Special Forces Operator stationed at Fort Bragg, NC.

Hazen Knives

Mark Hazen, who mastered the art of knife making over the past 30 years, is reintroducing classic old world craftsmanship in new and innovative designs.  Each knife is hand made without the use of jigs.  The blade and edge geometry has been engineered into each model to ensure optimum performance for its intended use.  The ergonomically designed handles are specifically contoured to give a comfortable and confident grip.  Each Hazen knife is uniquely crafted and well suited for all military and law enforcement personnel, sportsmen and the discriminating collector.

Hazen Knives

All the knives produced at Hazen Knives go through a 3-phase testing process to ensure that each knife meets uncompromising quality standards.  Each batch of steel is tested since all are not exactly the same.  One knife is made from each new batch and is rigorously tested by chopping through a 2X4 piece of lumber and cleanly slicing through a piece of 20 lb. paper.  If the hardness and edge retention meet the standards of phase one, the cutting test,  then the testing continues to phase two, the comfort test and phase three, the fit and finish test.

Furry Friend Sami
Meet Sami. Sami came to our back porch as a little feral kitten. We were able to trap him in order to get him neutered and vaccinated and now he is just the sweetest boy ever! He waits for us in the morning, and spends the entire day following Jill around the shop. In just 3 days he went from a kitty who ran from people to wanting to be in constant contact with us. He takes food from our hands and even lets us scratch his head. This sweet kitty needs a loving home! Don't you want to take him home with you?
