Sheila Stillman
|

We are excited to be once again showing jewelry by Sheila Stillman.
Sheila was born in New York City, where she attended Hunter College and earned a degree in anthropology. Her interest in foreign cultures led to travel through Europe, North Africa and the Caribbean. Ultimately she settled in the Virgin Islands, where she apprenticed with a master European goldsmith. There she discovered her love of working with high karat gold and gemstones, and has continued to pursue this passion until today.

In addition to traditional fabrication, Sheila's work incorporates the ancient technique of granulation, which has a 5,000 year history dating back to Mesopotamia, Greece, Byzantium and Egypt. Pattern and texture are created by delicately fusing tiny granules to the surface of the metal, reflecting meticulous concentration and attention to detail. The earrings on the right are an excellent example of Sheila's work in 22k gold and granulation.
| Argentium, 22k gold, and Druzy necklace |
When the price of gold soared, Sheila developed the technique of fusing 22k beads to Argentium sterling silver. This necklace combines the rich gold granulation with sterling silver and Druzy Agates. So elegant!
| Argentium and 22k gold earrings |
These earrings again combine Argentium sterling silver with 22k gold. What a beautiful look!
Sheila currently works out of her studio in Durham, NC. Her jewelry uniquely synthesizes ancient and contemporary craftsmanship and design in 22kt and 18kt gold, Argentium silver and gemstones.

New Glass!
|
We are excited to present two new glass artists!
Mark Rosenbaum, the creative force and owner of Rosetree Glass, brings an unusually diverse background in glassblowing, glass casting, ceramics and jewelry. The result is an exciting interpretation of the art of glass.
After receiving a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the Tyler School of Art, Mark became the first recipient of a Master of Fine Arts in glassblowing from Tulane University. Awarded a grant by the Louisiana Division of the Arts, he established the first privately owned glassblowing studio in the state of Louisiana.

In 2000, at the age of fifteen, David Royce began glassblowing as an apprentice for Tom Rine and Thomas Maras at Island Glass Studios in Minneapolis.
In 2005, after taking a break, he re-discovered his passion for glass-making and joined Foci Minnesota Center for Glass Arts, where he began working as studio manager and instructor.
"In my work I use traditional glass blowing techniques to achieve a variety of both sculptural and functional forms. My approach to glass relies heavily on layering of colors and extensive cold working and carving to reveal those colors. I am also fascinated with adding different materials to the work including bronze, steel, and wood.."

Beautiful Tiles by Marina Bosetti

Tiles by Marina Bosetti
We are so happy to have some new work by Marina Bosetti! Marina currently lives in Raleigh, but she spent her early "pottery years" here in Beaufort. We miss her, but are happy to still have her beautiful work.
Every image is a link to Marina's page.
Heavily influenced by the Arts and Crafts and Art Nouveau movements, Marina's art tile brings beauty into everyday settings. From wall murals and kitchen and bath backsplashes, countertops, sinks and tub surrounds to the numbers used to display your home address, each hand-made, hand-painted Bosetti project is unique. As Marina says, "Clay is the most ancient and versatile building material we have. It is earth."

Furry Friend
|
Our Furry Friend for July belongs to our good friend Marina Bosetti, whose amazing tile work is shown above.
Gem Stone is a one year old poodle who lives in Raleigh with Marina. Gem Stone is a working dog, going to the studio and helping Marina every day. She loves to play, as well, enjoying the company of other dogs, and people. Isn't she a gem?
