Van Gogh once said "The sunflower is mine, in a way."
But really, who can resist the cheerful beauty of the sunflower?

Wonderful and New!
Spring is all about the new.  We love seeing all the wonderful new things that our artists and craftsmen have developed over the winter.  Here are some examples.  As always, click on any photo to go to the artist's page

Curly Pod Earrings

Michael Michaud never ceases to amaze us with his creativity. This season he has combined his signature green patina over bronze with gold plate and gunmetal over bronze. His designs are based on botanical forms, as always, but have a new boldness.

"The Porcelain Garden was created in 1982 when Liesa Smith and I merged our creative talents.

Our first creations were functional household ceramics, with sculpted flower decorations; hence the name  The Porcelain Garden. During the early 1980s, we started carving in translucent porcelain, and enjoyed the direction that our work was taking us.

Then, one day we were introduced to Lithophanes by a collector. We had never seen such amazing work done in porcelain before!  We recognized that this wonderful art form had nearly disappeared, and only a few people were still familiar with it. We recognized the potential appeal that these beautiful artworks had, so we set out to reintroduce Lithophanes to the world; and that we did!

We originated the concept of Lithophanes as nightlights, at a time when few artists were making tasteful and artistic nightlights. Nightlights are still to this day the most popular form of our Lithophanes.

After Mrs. Smith's departure, I continued refining and developing my skills in designing and creating what are now recognized as the finest and most intricately detailed Lithophanes in the United States.

I pioneered the technique of coloring lithophanes from the back side. I then broadened the reach and style of Lithophanes from the original Victorian era images, to more modern images to appeal to today's tastes. I hope to continue expanding the scope and reach of our lithophanes."

"I design jewelry I want to wear. I like my jewelry bold and elegant and fun.

My jewelry line spans three generations of inspiration. My nature imagery comes from walks in the woods near my home on the Eastern shore of Maryland with my daughter June, and the magical way she sees the world.

My lace designs are a tribute to my grandma, who first introduced me to the love of crafting by hand when she taught me to crochet when I was little.
I make each piece by hand in my home studio."

What a great idea!
Funky Rock Designs came up with this great idea... a REAL rock in which to hide your key. Jeff Henderson and his family have fun collecting rocks along the New England coast. Then Jeff hollows the rocks to make vases, lamps, candle sticks, and these clever "key rocks".

Furry Friend... Astro
We have another wonderful shelter dog to introduce to you this month. This is Astro! Astro is a male husky/shepherd mix.

Astro

Meet Astro. He arrived at the shelter on December 22, 2014 after being found as a stray in Newport. He is about 4 years old and is a handsome boy with two different colored eyes. Astro is current on his vaccinations and is now neutered. He has a lot of energy and is learning his leash manners and does great! A smart boy who would love a forever family to call his own that has some time to spend working with him a little. Astro has interacted with several other shelter mates and has done very well...though he does like to nip at the dogs ankles as if herding them when running. Once you call him out he stops and seems very smart and wants to please his human friends. Might you have the perfect home for this charming fella? Come meet Astro today and give him a chance at a fabulous life!
