How do they learn it?
They fall.... and falling,
they're given wings."

By the Beautiful Sea
Here in Beaufort, we are surrounded by water, and it is so very much a part of our lives, that we thought we would devote this newsletter to works that reflect our beautiful, watery environment.
Inspired by the Sea
Living by the water, as we do, the sea finds its way into every aspect of our lives.  We see it reflected in the jewelry, the pottery, and the glass.

Catherine Weitzman
Star Fish Locket by Catherine Weitzman

Catherine Weitzman makes her home by a very different sea.  She lives in Hawaii, and the influence of her environment is evident in her colors and in her imagery.  This gold vermeil locket holds a starfish and a scattering of aqua beads.

Janet Harriman
Sea Urchin earrings by Janet Harriman

Beaufort's own Janet Harriman makes wonderful, three dimensional sea urchin lockets.  We also love these simpler earrings inspired by the sea urchin.

Nell Chandler
Dolphin earrings by Nell Chandler

Nell Chandler paints delightful images on polyshrink, then sets them in her sterling silver jewelry.

Judy Riendeau
Crab Bowl by Judy Riendeau

Judy Riendeau has fun with her crabby images on bowls and platters.

Jen Stas
Turtle Vase by Jen Stas

Jen Stas carves each piece of pottery, then hand paints the images.  Her motifs range from dragonflies and leaves to sea turtles and sand dollars.

Glass Eye
Wave Paperweight by Glass Eye Studio

Glass Eye Studios, in Washington State, encased the concept of a wave in this glass paperweight.
Collected From the Sea
Some of the creations at Handscapes are made from things that are actually collected from the sea.  Here are a few of them.

Sri Sisters
Sea Glass pendant by Sri Sisters

Carolyn and Quinn Sale, of Sri Sisters Sea Glass jewelry, collaborate to make these sea glass creations.  Quinn gathers sea glass in the Bahamas, and Carolyn makes the lampworked beads that go in to the finished designs.

Anechy Padron
Sea Glass pendant by Anechy Padron

Anechy Padron, who spends part of her time in Beaufort, and part of her time sailing in the Caribbean, also collects sea glass.  She wraps her glass, letting the shape of the glass inform her design.

Becky Hemby
Shorebreak candle by Becky Hemby

Becky Hemby, who lives in NC's Outer Banks, gathers shells, sea glass, and fan coral to craft into her lovely candles.

Nicola Mason
Shell face magnet by Nicola Mason

Nicola Mason collects all the funky shells and pieces of shell to create these wonderful shell faces.  Each has a distinct personality!

Images of the Sea
And then, of course, there are the actual images of the sea.  The water inspires painters and photographers alike.  Click on any image to see more.
David Galyon
Seafoam Day by David Galyon

Multi-talented David Galyon is a luthier by profession, but he loves to take photographs, and the ocean is one of his favorite subjects.

Donna Robertson
Sundown on the Creek by Donna Robertson

Donna Robertson is a versatile artist, working in oils or acrylics.  She paints the down east marshes and creeks beautifully.  We love the reflection on the water!

Linda Werthwein
Sea Oats by Linda Werthwein

Linda Werthwein works in oils, acrylics, pastels, and watercolor.  Her themes always involve the beauty around her, whether it is the sea, sky, wild ponies, or the dunes.

Scott Taylor
Snow Ponies by Scott Taylor

Our Islands are the home to all sorts of interesting wild life.  Feral horses inhabit Carrot Island and the banks. Scott Taylor captured the Wild Ponies on Carrot Island frolicking in a rare snowstorm.
Furry Friend... Max
Last month we featured Eddie as our Furry Friend.  Well guess what!  Eddie found his forever home!  He was adopted on Valentine's Day!

So this month we would like to introduce you to Max, who is also waiting for his forever home.

Max

Meet Max!  He is a gorgeous boy with a lot of energy though he walks well on the leash. He is very playful and wants to play with everyone. He loves running and playing. He is about 4 years old, neutered and current on all his vaccinations, the only thing this boy is missing is his forever home to call his own.

Click on Max's images to read more about him and the Carteret County Humane Society.

Happy Max!
This guy, Max, right here needs a forever home. He knows some commands such as sit, laydown, and stay. He likes little dogs. He isn't so fond of dogs his size or bigger. He is a great car rider. He needs someone to take him on long walks. Please think of opening up your home to Max!
We hope you have enjoyed our newsletter and we would love for you to come see us!

All the Best,
