"Do not be angry with the rain; it simply does not know how to fall upwards." Vladimir Nabokov

After the relentless rains Anne Lovett took this photo.  It was the first glimpse of sun in many days.

 Renaissance Glass
  |
Handcrafted in Asheville, NC, Renaissance glass jewelry is made from dichroic glass. The glass was first developed for scientific applications such as lasers and space mirrors. Vaporized metal oxides are deposited on the glass in microscopically thin layers. The brilliant colors are produced from light being reflected just like what occurs in a rainbow or a dragonfly wing.

The folks at Renaissance glass have worked with glass since 1976, but they began experimenting with dichroic glass a little over a decade ago and have been at it ever since. There are an amazing amount of steps in creating every single piece of jewelry.     | | Blue dangle earrings |
"Each piece is handled many times and there is no machine that can make the glass. We fire the glass to over 1400 degrees several times in order to achieve the right effect. Each firing can take up to 12 hours from start to finish." | | Green teardrop earrings |
When the sheet of glass is cool enough, they cut the shapes with diamond tools, polish the glass, match the earrings by the patterns, and complete the design. It's a lot of steps and they do every bit of it by hand, and the results are worth it. It's like capturing lightning in a bottle and every time the kiln is opened it's a new surprise | | Red and pink earrings |

North Carolina glass artist Lisa Oakley creates incredibly beautiful glass beads.  The beads are mouth blown and furnace pulled.  the original "cane" is stretched to create a long straw, sometimes fifty feet long.  It is then cut into two foot lengths, annealed, then cut into beads.  Amazing!
