FIREWORKS ARE ILLEGAL

The Homewood Fire department wants to remind residents that most fireworks are illegal in the State of Illinois. Not only are they illegal, but they are also dangerous. Every year, in the United States, more than 3,000 children go to emergency rooms as a result of fireworks.

The only legal fireworks in the State of Illinois are those which are considered "novelties," and include snakes, sparklers and party-poppers.

Sparklers are the most dangerous legal firework available in the state. A sparkler burns at temperatures of up to 2000 degrees, which is hot enough to melt some metals. Sparklers account for one-third of firework injuries to children 5 and under.

DISASTER ASSISTANCE DEADLINE IS NEAR

The Homewood Fire Department and FEMA want to remind residents that the deadline for filing claims associated with the April 18th storm has been extended to July 24.

Residents can contact FEMA by registering online at www.disasterassistance.gov , or by smartphone at m.feam.gov .   You can also call 800-621-3362 or for those who are hearing or speech impaired call TYY 800-462-7585.
