First Responder News - July 2013 |
Greetings!
From the beginning, the NFTC has been committed to providing and developing fundamental/basic hands-on forensic education for first responders without the fluff. As we continue to grow the Center, trends indicate that many of our participants are ready to take their training to the next level. To accommodate that need, we have begun researching and contracting with agencies to deliver advanced programs. Please note: many of these organizations adhere to a different registration process. While our system allows for last minute registrations, these facilitators are in high demand across the country and will cancel early, if there isn't adequate registration. Vendors we have identified for possible partnerships are:
We have selected a few program from these companies that might be of interest. Please help us identify Advanced Training Programs for 2014 by taking our very brief survey. Thank you in advance for your assistance.

INVESTIGATIVE TIPS & TECHNIQUES:
COMPLIMENT YOUR CRIME SCENE PHOTOGRAPHY NOW, NOT LATER
Andy Kehm, D-ABMDI, Program Manager, NFTC Detective/Sergeant (Active) Bethlehem Police Department Forensic Services Unit
Preparation for court presentation should not begin when the District Attorney contacts you to begin preparing the case for trial. The reality is this is when most preparation occurs.
Something I learned to do while I am in the process of documenting the scene, is to get into the mindset of how this will appear to a jury. This, of course, was through trial and error over the years. I am NOT suggesting to disregard the standard crime scene processing protocols with regards to photography. The far, mid range, and close-up images are critical to the scene documentation. However, what I am suggesting is to compliment the standard crime scene photography.
Complimenting your crime scene documentation is easier than most people realize. There are some basic steps that need to be followed to accomplish this.

SPREAD THE WORD!
The International Association of Identification (I.A.I.) brings together the forensic disciplines in criminalistics to one organization, including bloodstain pattern analysis, crime scene investigation, digital evidence, firearm and toolmark, footwear and tire track, forensic anthropology, forensic art, forensic laboratory analysis, forensic odontology, forensic photography and electronic digital imaging, forensic podiatry, latent prints/fingerprint identification/AFIS and question documents.
Pennsylvania has not had had a State Division of the Association for several years. There is a growing desire not only by those working directly in the criminal forensics field, but detectives, medicolegal death investigators, and forensic nurses, to re-start the Pennsylvania Division of the International Association for Identification. The I.A.I. has authorized the sub-division of the state to form the Southeast Sub-Division of the PA-I.A.I.
Many in our field today do not realize the benefits the State Division could bring including state specific training, networking, research, references, current affairs, and certifications. With your interest and support, it is our hope that we can organize the Southeast Sub-Division of the Pennsylvania Division of the I.A.I. and begin offering one day conferences in the near future.
Please speak to your colleagues and pass along the benefits this organization can bring to our field. If you are interested in being part of the Southeast Sub-Division of the Pennsylvania Division of the I.A.I, please click here to e-mail your name and organization. We will be passing this information along to the I.A.I. We will keep you posted about the progress of this exciting new opportunity.
