The March 4 issue of the Pocono Record highlighted one of CBI's hidden treasures, the Fab Lab. Launched in 2007, the Fab Lab features high tech equipment and programs that are shaping the future of manufacturing in the United States. In addition to a laser etcher and high end design capabilities, the Fab Lab features a 3-D printer. Three dimensional printing, also known as a additive manufacturing, is becoming increasingly more popular with domestic manufacturers as runs of parts using 3-D printing continues to grow. According to USA Today, "By 2019, part making is expected to constitute 80% of the industry's $6.9 billion in revenue."
While most large size 3-D printers can cost companies hundreds of thousands of dollars in investment, your company can get a taste of 3-D printing by utilizing the lab. In the six years since the Fab Lab has been operational, we have had several small to mid-size companies take advantage of our services. Companies can reserve time using the space and the printer for a nominal fee. Companies can also obtain training for their employees through our open enrollment automated design and fabrication courses. For the spring, we are offering the following programs applicable to businesses:
As additive manufacturing continues to grow, so do the benefits. Manufacturing.net, recently identified five benefits that most companies have not considered.
- Freedom to design and innovate without penalties
- Increased supply chain proficiency with "3D faxing"
- Support of green manufacturing initiatives
- Bottom line improvements through factory physics
- Get parts - fast
