First Responder News - December 2012

Greetings!

While managing our social media accounts, we came across a post entitled "A Christmas Wish for a Dying Boy".  Six-year old Nathan Norman has terminal cancer and is reaching out to policemen, firemen and all emergency service workers to fulfill his final Christmas wish.  He would like to obtain as many patches as possible to add to his collection.  The Bethlehem Police Department and our EMS training department recently sent patches to Nathan.  If you have some extra patches at your agency, please consider dropping them in the mail.  I am sure he would love to hear from more of our local heroes!  To find out more or to get Nathan's address, please click here.
  .
As the year draws to close, we want to thank you for your continued support of the NFTC and we look forward to working with you in the New Year.  May you and your families have a joyous holiday season.

Investigative Tips & Techniques:

WHAT ARE YOU DOING?

The staff at the NFTC wanted to illicit the experiences of our colleagues. We realized there is vast experience from all areas of First Responders that have attended our classes. We would like to tap into that knowledge and create a forum where that tremendous amount of experience can be shared by you to the benefit of other colleagues. We would welcome submissions of your Tips & Techniques for publication. Written submissions should be sent to NFTC@northampton.edu.  Graphics can also accompany the submission.

BPA TRAINING RECAP

Andrew Kehm, D-ABMDI, Detective/Sergeant (Active) BPD FSU, Program Manager, NFTC

The Northeast Forensic Training Center hosted our first forensic specialty course, which was a complete success. Mrs. LeeAnn Singley, of Grayson Singley and Associates instructed a 40 hour Bloodstain Pattern Analysis course. The attendees consisted of Detectives, Coroners, and Crime Scene Investigators from local jurisdictions, as well as from western Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and Maryland. During the course, the attendees were instructed, performed hands-on experiments, and documented the results of a variety of different characteristic aspects of Bloodstain Pattern Analysis.

The expectations of the attendees were varied at the start of the training. Some had some exposure or experience with Bloodstain Pattern Analysis. Some attended with reserved expectations. By mid-week persons with reservations was beginning to see or appreciate the value in what the Bloodstain Pattern Analysis can mean and add to the understanding of the crime scene.
