TAKING THE ANXIETY OUT OF PERFORMANCE REVIEWS
Damian J. Dinan
It's that time of year again! No, I'm not referring to the holiday parties, gift giving and cheer. I'm referring to the dreaded yearly employee review. There aren't many interactions that are more stressful for both the employee and the employer than the performance review. There's even a Facebook page dedicated to the hatred of peformance reviews.
In a recent survey, 24% of employees stated they "dread" their annual review. What's more disturbing is that in that same survey, 51% stated they felt performance reviews are not an accurate gauge of their work. Why do employees feel this way?
Usually the performance review is done once a year, thrown in a filing cabinet, never to be seen again until next year. Only 25% of the survey respondents reported receiving a review more than once a year. Most employees feel that is not the way to rate their day to day performance.
