Greetings!
Can an organization truly flourish without training? Training not only fulfills a functional need, giving employees the skills necessary to complete their job successfully, but also fulfills an emotional need. It shows employees that companies are willing to invest in them. In turn, employees are willing to remain at the organization. |
WHAT ARE YOU WAITING FOR?
Damian J. Dinan
A recent survey of organizations throughout the country shows that many companies have delayed training programs over the last four years. The most affected programs were in management development and individual professional development, with 49% and 45% of respondents citing delays in those areas respectively. Some of the reasons for delaying were limited budget, lack of time and lack of senior management support.
Has your company delayed implementing these initiatives? What have been your reasons? Certainly the recession has put a strain on budgets at many organization. In these difficult financial times, that certainly seems to be a valid reason for delaying programs. Or is it?
A common practice in many organizations is to take their best worker in a particular area and promote them to managers. We take our best sales representatives and make them sales managers or our best production line worker and make him or her production manager. The skills that made that person great as a sales rep or line worker are not the skills that he or she needs to be a great manager. So, what are the costs of poor management due to the lack of professional development? <READ MORE> |
INTERNATIONAL PROJECT MANAGEMENT DAY
November 1
International Project Management Day will be held on November 1, 2012. One of the themes of the day is Children in Project Management. The Project Management Institute (PMI) would love to see the skills and techniques utilized by project management professionals to be incorporated into grade school and high school curriculum. As stated on the PMI website "The skills learned as part of a project management training program will become life skills and these skills can make a significant and positive difference in a child's future."
Are these skills and techniques so important that they need to be taught at the grade school and high school level? A recent article in the Gallup Business Journal would say yes. The article shows the impact of poor project management on the company line. A study of IT projects showed "the average overrun was 27%, but one in six projects had a cost overrun of 200% on average and a schedule overrun of almost 70%." These overruns are extremely costly. The estimated loss is $50 billion to $150 billion in the United States.
The author claims that most projects are failing as there is too much focus on the rational aspects of project management; the charts, the graphs, etc. and not enough focus on engaging employees' in the outcome. It's the so called soft skills that become critical when engaging employees. You need proper communication, direction and the other aspects of great people management in order bring employees to an emotional commitment to the project at hand. |
