Fall Events In Waltham
We love fall! Some of our favorite community events are coming up, such as Waltham Day on the Common and Waltham Farm Day at the Waltham Fields Community Farm. We love connecting with the community at these events, so be sure to stop by and say hello. This fall also marks the official kickoff of Healthy Waltham's 10th Anniversary Celebration! We are planning a Healthy Food Forum, cooking workshops, and a community walk to mark the occasion (more on the Healthy Food Forum below). A special welcome to all students as they settle in to the school year.
|
Please mark your calendars! The first in a series of events to mark the 10th anniversary of Healthy Waltham will be held on:
Wednesday, October 22
6:30-8:00 PM
Waltham Public Library
This event will be a community healthy food forum on access to healthy food for all who live, work and learn in Waltham. Our keynote speaker will be Brian Donahue, Associate Professor of American Environmental Studies at Brandeis University. In addition, we will have a panel of local food activists and specialists, including Claire Kozower from Waltham Fields Community Farm! This event will be free and open to the public. For more on this topic, see the newly published "New England Food Vision."

Get a Free Home Energy Assessment and $10 Goes to Healthy Waltham
Healthy Waltham and Next Step Living are working together to reduce energy use, make homes healthy, and save money for residents. A free Home Energy Assessment via Mass Save can help reduce your energy use and make your home healthier. When you save energy, you reduce the cost of your utility bills and reduce emission of greenhouse gasses that are harmful to the environment. A professional advisor will come to your home to identify ways you can save energy, and the Massachusetts programs that make energy saving measures affordable. For every person who registers for a Home Energy Assessment and completes the assessment by December 31, 2014, Next Step Living will make a $10 donation to Healthy Waltham.
Click here to register for your free Home Energy Assessment. Thank you for supporting our environment and Healthy Waltham! Read more about this program here on our website!

Constant Contact Day with Healthy Waltham
Employees from Constant Contact, headquartered in Waltham, joined Healthy Waltham for some hard work and fun at the McDevitt Middle School. Together, we weeded the garden, tied up tomato plants, and pruned raspberries. We also spread compost to improve soil for possible expansion. Yes it was a warm day, but everyone had a great time and the garden is looking great! Is your company interested in a fun employee community activity? Send us an email at info@healthy-waltham.org to discuss a project!

Family Cooking Workshop at the Farm a Success
Earlier in the month, we had our first Farm2Table family cooking workshop in collaboration with the Waltham Fields Community Farm. Families gathered in the Learning Garden on a beautiful afternoon for the workshop led by Judy, our executive director, and Yuki, our intern. After a farm tour to see the vegetables growing in the fields, we made burritos with swiss chard pesto with summer squash, chard, and sweet potatoes. The kids enthusiastically tried out using the knives and tried everything they made! For some photos from our workshop, please see our photo gallery here.

Our Summer Interns have been Busy
We are fortunate to work with wonderful interns. This summer's interns, Abbie Doane-Simon, Yuki Wiland, and Manny Zahonet, have been busy helping with various programs. Read what Abbie wrote about her experiences being an intern here. Read about Yuki's experience teaching a teen nutrition class at the Chill Zone, the Waltham Recreation Program's teen drop-in center. Our summer interns have been great and we will be welcoming two new fall interns soon!
