To help reach these goals, we are excited to welcome our new Vice President of Development, Dr. Adrienne Garcia. Dr. Garcia served as the executive director of the Hillsborough Community College Foundation from 2002 until joining HEF. Prior to that, she worked with The Lawton and Rhea Chiles Center for Healthy Mothers and Babies at the USF College of Medicine and the H. Lee Moffitt Cancer Center and Research Institute Foundation.
A message from Dr. Garcia:
As a Tampa native and public school graduate (Go Jefferson Dragons!), I'm delighted to serve as Vice President of Development at Hillsborough Education Foundation.
I look forward to getting to know more of our donors, sponsors, volunteers and mentors in the months to come. From the West Tampa office location with familiar supporters, I am eager to take on the responsibility, with the help of Foundation staff and volunteers, for increasing the resource base for the HEF Teaching Tools store, programs, and scholarships.
All the best,

Just 1 hour a week can change a life.
Studies show that students with a mentor are:
46% more likely to stay drug free
27% more likely to stay alcohol-free
62% more likely to stay in school
37% more likely to avoid violence
Through weekly sessions mentors instill self-confidence, encourage better decision making, and provide a support system that many students lack; thus building a foundation of basic values and challenging their student to take responsibility for their actions. Mentors can be an excellent source of advice for the student, but more often than not what the student really needs is just someone to listen and offer encouragement. For more information on how you can help change the life of a student in Hillsborough County, contact Fred Weber at [email protected] or 813-574-0280.

The Foundation is excited to announce the arrival of this year's AmeriCorps Vistas. Kirsten Donohue (left) and Alexi Berry (right) joined us mid-July and will be working at the Foundation during their Vista service year until August 2014.
Kirsten will be replacing our 2012 Vista, Crystal Carpenter, as the Teaching Tools Specialist. She will be recruiting volunteers and assisting in the Teaching Tools program. Kirsten was born and raised in Staten Island, NY and graduated with her bachelor's degree in Psychology from Saint Leo. She chose to be an AmeriCorps member because she wanted to help those in need and change the world for the better.
Alexi will be replacing our 2012 Vista, Franchesca Conde, as a Mentor Specialist for the Take Stock in Children program. Originally from Philadelphia, Alexi graduated from the University of South Florida in 2011 with a Bachelor of Fine Arts. Citigroup Volunteers helping inventory the Teaching Tools warehouse.

Thank You Citigroup Volunteers
So much of what we do here at the Foundation is thanks to our fleet of dedicated volunteers. This month we'd like to recognize Citigroup for their outstanding commitment to volunteering at HEF. Over the past two years alone, Citigroup employees have dedicated more than 500 volunteer hours to the Foundation at the Teaching Tools Store and various events. When asked why Citigroup continues to volunteer at the Foundation Carmen Garcia of Citigroup said, "[Citigroup] Employees find it gratifying to know that in some cases they are directly affecting the schools where their children may attend. Through our volunteerism we have come to realize that our time has helped both teachers and students in the District, simply by providing basic necessities and giving a few hours of our time."
If you would like to volunteer at HEF contact Kirsten Donohue a [email protected] or (813) 463-4280.
