MEET AND WELCOME GERALDINE AND TINO YOUVELLA (HOPI)
ON FRIDAY NOVEMBER 13TH
Kachina Doll Carving Demonstration -- Meet and greet special guests, Geraldine and Tino Youvella
We are so privileged and excited to have Geraldine and Tino Youvella join the Shop AND that Tino will discuss and demonstrate his art of carving kachina dolls from cottonwood root. This will be the first time Tino has been at the Shop; however, we have been selling his family's kachina dolls for 25 years (or more!) and know many of you have his work in your collections.
| Kachina dolls by Tino, Alexander and Preston Youvella |
Tino Youvella is of the Kachina/Parrot Clan and has been carving dolls since 1962. His wife, Geraldine, sometimes helps with the painting. His sons Alexander, Preston and Darrell are also carvers. Please join us Friday, Nov. 13, and give a warm welcome to Tino and Geraldine! We thank our longtime supporter, friend of the Shop and editor Tom Surface, who has helped connect Tino and other carvers of Hopi to educational institutions. Tino's trip to Towson State University this month has enabled him to also be our special guest. Learn more about Tino Youvella and check out a four-minute YouTube video filmed and produced by Tom's son, Greg Surface. See examples of kachina doll carvings on our online store.

WHAT ELSE HAS BEEN HAPPENING AT THE SHOP ?
|
Well, like all of you, we can hardly believe November is upon us and we're all feeling so busy... and excited for the holiday season! If you missed seeing Artie Yellowhorse last month, we missed you too! But we are happy to say we purchased so many new pieces of Artie Yellowhorse Designs jewelry that you will very much enjoy coming in to see the selection. Learn more about Artie Yellowhorse Designs.
We've also been adding new pieces to the online store, so take a look!
YES, OUR HOLIDAY CARDS ARE IN, OUR HOLIDAY ORNAMENTS ARE HUNG AND WE HAVE A WONDERFUL NEW 2016 CALENDAR! (IT'S STILL NICE TO HANG A WALL CALENDAR TO SUPPLEMENT YOUR DIGITALS AND HAVE BEAUTY ON THE WALL!)
We worked hard to find calendars this year related to American Indian art and it wasn't easy! Two of our smaller, native art calendars are out of business and the third was American Indian Art Magazine's calendar; this is their final year of publication, so no calendar for 2016! Thanks to looking high and low and many calls, we located this wonderful calendar with artwork by Jim Yellowhawk (Cheyenne River Sioux/Onondaga). We're offering it on our website too, with a media mail shipping price, as a special service this year. Take a look at 'the Lakota Way' 2016 Calendar.
WALRUS TUSK IVORY CARVINGS FROM ALASKA ARE IN
We are so fortunate each year to have such a great variety of carvings, most of them from St. Lawrence Island in Alaska. Every year we receive both classic animals and figures from your favorite carvers, and also new designs and pieces. Otters in different stances, miniature versions of loon and duck species from the Mayac family and some incredible transformation spirit dancers by Ron Apangalook are among the new arrivals. We will work to add new pieces to our Web store so check our Alaskan Carvings page often!

LOOK FOR AUTHENTIC AMERICAN INDIAN ARTS -
PURCHASE FROM REPUTABLE BUSINESSES AND ARTISTS
|
Buying American Indian art is such an enriching experience - and so meaningful for every person involved: for the artist, the shops and galleries, the receivers of gifts, the purchasers adding to their own collections, for people seeing and learning about the arts (and often the culture and artist vision).
Unfortunately, there is still a problem with misrepresentation of American Indian art and artists - problems that were even evident as far back as the 1930s when the Shop first opened.
What can you do? In a nutshell, buying from reputable businesses and artists who will provide written certificates on your purchases is the best way to be assured that your purchases are authentic. We also have "Tips for Collecting," if you would like to take a look!
|
DON'T FORGET TO "ROCK YOUR MOCS - ACROSS THE NATION"!
|
November 8 - 15 - What started as a one-day occurrence is now a weeklong event! Join in and celebrate a time to learn about cultures through footwear, as Native people across the world wear their moccasins as a way to recognize Tribal individuality and celebrate National Native American Heritage Month. Pull on your own mocs and share your photos! www.facebook.com/RockYourMocs

NEWS FROM THE INTERIOR MUSEUM
|
Currently on View:
:
DOI Pop! On Air, On Screen & In Print explores the intersection of the Department of the Interior with popular culture, highlighting classic examples from the early 1900s to the present from across its bureaus. Visitors will see how the Department's people and places have influenced American identity and figured into television shows, feature films and bestselling publications. From silent films and animated cartoons to blockbuster hits and novels, visitors will discover just how often America's public lands, wildlife refuges and national parks-and even the headquarters building in Washington, DC-have been cast in memorable supporting roles. With historical artifacts and iconic imagery, the exhibition also illustrates how the Department itself has enlisted icons of pop culture for help in publicizing its missions over the years.
Museum hours: Mondays - Fridays, 8:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. (closed Federal holidays)
