> Sports and Soccer Visionary Hunt Succumbs to Cancer Lamar Hunt, a founding investor in MLS and the operator of FC Dallas, the Columbus Crew and until recently, the Kansas City Wizards, died Wednesday night after a long battle with cancer. For almost half a century, Hunt's has been a pre-eminent name on the U.S. sports landscape. His contributions to MLS and soccer in the United States in general are almost immeasurable, ranging from his initial investment in the league to his vision in developing soccer-specific stadiums to his willingness to take over a struggling league-controlled franchise in the interest of the league's survival. http://web.mlsnet.com/news/mls_news.jsp?ymd=20...
Editor’s Note: Lamar Hunt could easily be called
the father of modern team sports in America, and we
were fortunate enough for him to catch Soccer Fever,
or MLS may not even exist today. Here are links to
several other stories about this great man. |

> More Synthetic-Turf Fields Sought for McLean McLean Youth Soccer (MYS) officials hope to build 12 new artificial-turf fields in the McLean area and so far have identified four sites that could be used, but only one of those four - the police field - is slated to receive lights. Three of the four fields singled out for synthetic turf are owned by the Fairfax County Park Authority. MYS officials will conduct a capital campaign drive to raise the estimated $3 million needed to put artificial turf on the four fields. http://www.sungazette.net/articles/2006/12/11/fairfax/news... |

-> Potomac Soccer Wire Should Be LIVE Next Week Thanks to everyone's help over these past two weeks, I feel pretty comfortable with the format of information we've come up with. Now, with the web site nearly ready for launch, I anticipate next Tuesday's wire to be the real deal, and hope everyone begins referring us to friends and colleagues. This sort of consolidated information on things that concern people who follow or participate in grassroots soccer in MD, DC, and VA is simply not available anywhere else. It has been hard work culling the web for news items, especially with nearly every league in hibernation for the winter. However, when we're live, I anticipate a majority of the news/leads to be sent in by readers, as well as far too much news to choose from once leagues are back in the swing. As that happens, we'll move to more issues during the week to make room. Our goal is to have at least one headline in every issue that interests every subscriber. I hope I've done that so far during this testing phase, and if so - then it should only get easier to do once the leagues start up again. Thanks for you help, and please keep the feedback coming! |

-> WISL Rankings Coming Next Week We anticipate our first live issue to start next Tuesday. If so, then this space will contain the top 10 men's teams playing in the Washington International Soccer League, based on the past two years of play. The rankings will link to our Potomac Soccer Wire web site where all teams in the league will be represented. Each issue thereafter will contain similar rankings for other leagues in our region, including WAGS, NCSL, ODSL, NVSL, and possibly others. Stay tuned... |
