By the time Black Friday and Cyber Monday are past I am well on my way to wanting to hide out from the commercialism of this season. My dear husband, who happens to enjoy shopping (bless his heart) steps in and takes over many of those tasks, and I head to my studio to find respite.  December has always seemed to me like the perfect  time to cozy in and warm oneself with a cup of tea and some new art supply or technique to play around with. It's something about hibernation, increased dream time with longer nights that feeds the creative imagination.

But I'm also grateful for sales of my paintings and prints that are coming in now, knowing that they will be given as gifts. Anything you've seen on my blog or in the newsletter is probably for sale, so just ask.  And my book and online e-course also make good gifts to give as creative boosts.  More on them in this issue.

The Art Play this month is about taking a small idea and making it bigger. I'll also share some excellent online resources for learning about acrylic color and doing different image transfer techniques.

Cheers,
Susan

ART PLAY:  Go Large

acrylic on 10 X 11" w/c paper

We tried something different in Monday Muse Group - painting larger.  The idea was to take a piece we'd done on the 10 X 11" watercolor paper size and take the idea bigger, but in the same amount of time (which generally boils down to under 2 hours by the time the demo is over.)  I wanted to work with the idea in the above piece I had done a couple weeks before.

I liked the sense of the sky opening and the color scheme and the use of acrylic "skins", so I took that into the start for the larger painting, this time on canvas.  As I was working the question arose - how much do I try to copy what I did before, as opposed to using it as a take off point?

One thing I've learned is that the lucky accidents that happen in play can never be duplicated. One can only hope for new ones while repeating a bit of the color scheme or materials, or an idea - like "unzipping the sky".

acrylic on 14 X 18" canvas
Here is the first stage of Going Larger from the smaller painting, this time on a 14 X 18" canvas.  It definitely owed its structure to the earlier version, but it felt a bit static and boxed in.  So I worked on it a bit more.

The last picture here is of my resolution, which took me away from the original piece, but felt more finished.

"Unzip the Sky", acrylic on 14 X 18" canvas

It was fun and quite freeing to allow myself to loosely "copy" in the beginning, and then just react to what was happening on the surface.

Do you have a small jewel of a painting that you'd like to take large?  Start with the intention to loosely imitate the aspects which you most love and let the rest of the new painting develop on its own.

On Line Art Instruction

Painters of any stripe can find a wealth of free and inexpensive art instruction on line.  Not the same as in person instruction, but a great way to get some questions answered and see how others are using media.  Here's some jewels I've discovered.

Do you want to know which acrylic pigments map to the color wheel so that you can more easily achieve your goals in the eternal quest for probing the mysteries of Color?  And in the process do you want to avoid purchasing a new palette of expensive pigments every time you take another course or read a new book? Golden Paints has just what you need in their  Color Mixing Guide. You'll also find the Color Mixing Poster which shows you which paints the manufacturer uses to get the basic tube/bottled colors we buy. Golden Paints is offering a wonderful course here in condensed and easy to digest form.

How to Make an Image Transfer is a free download from the mixed media magazine, Cloth Paper Scissors.  Lots of new ideas here, from how to make an image transfer to fabric, paper, and other photo transfer techniques with instructions and fine examples. There's even instructions on how to add photo transfers to your Zentangles!

In the Company of Muses:  Adventures in Mixed Media Art Journaling is my own self-paced multi media course in eBook form which will launch you on an exciting process of creative discovery. In it you learn playful mixed media painting and collage techniques combined with meditation and writing to encourage that wise and soulful intuitive voice and open new doors to creative expression. bookrelease

This book is a celebration of the creative spirit through the practice of art journaling. My own art journals serve as examples of how personal revelation and healing art are cultivated through this process. The reader is guided through the steps including: accessing a quiet state of mind, translating inner feelings and visions to paper, employing a wide array of painting and collage techniques, and writing expressively to reap vibrant meaning from the images appearing this spontaneous manner. The colorful images, materials, techniques, and written words combine for a rich feast for the imagination.

The book is available online at the Blurb bookstore where you can also preview it. If you live in the Santa Rosa/Sebastopol area,  email me if you are interested in picking up a signed softcover copy.
