One of my sons is coming home from college for a visit today and another next month. I remember those intense days of college and late nights cramming for finals. I wish them well, and anticipate their return with that infusion of youthful energy and accompanying disorganization on the home scene.
Meanwhile the studio is scattered with new paintings in progress. The painting featured above is a continued exploration of the Wabi-Sabi concept we've been exploring with some exciting results in Muse Groups lately. (note some student examples in this newsletter).
Remember the discussion of Wabi-Sabi in the December issue - the quality of things that suggests a natural process, vulnerable to the effects of time, weathering, human treatment? It helps to be painting with fingers, literally feeling the way forward through the paint and over a textured surface.
In this issue I'll be sharing the concept of Automatism, borrowed from the Surrealists. It's the powerful practice of automatic drawing and painting and writing which enriches our art.
Tomorrow I'm headed with a car full of art to Carneros Inn in Napa, California to participate in an event called a "taste of Napa" put on for the heads of the international stock exchanges. I'll be "the painter" stationed between the lavender and honey. Bob will be along to help and enjoy the scene.
There's one more space in the Monday Muse Group which starts a new session June 3 and lots of opportunities to try out a mini workshop this summer.
In June I'll be off for a week of summer fun (as a camper, not a teacher) at Camp Winnarainbow, an adult circus and performing arts camp with Wavy Gravy in northern California. The motto there is "It's never too late to have a happy childhood" and they mean it! I don't remember summer camp as a child being half the fun of this camp. Maybe you can join me there?
Cheers,
Susan

When we make art in the Muse Group, we are drawing on many different art movements. In our expressive painting and free writing techniques we can particularly identify with the Automatism of the Surrealists.
In their revolution against a society ruled by the oppression of the "rational" mind, the Surrealists sought to tap into another "superior" reality, that of the subconscious. They were influenced at the time by the work of Sigmund Freud. Artists like Andre Breton, Joan Miro, Salvador Dali and Jean Arp practiced automatic drawing and painting, utilizing random movements of the hand.
Their "automatic" drawings, done as involuntary actions not under the control of the conscious mind, sometimes suggested the illusion of forms. The conscious mind then took over to develop the work that it was in that way freed from societal constraints and definitions.
In his 1924 Surrealist Manifesto, Andre Breton defined Surrealism as "Psychic automatism in its pure state, by which one proposes to express. . . the actual functioning of thought. . .in the absence of any control exercised by reason, exempt from any aesthetic or moral concern."
Whether or not we feel the need to revolt against the dictates of our culture, we can certainly benefit from the freedom of automatism. Whether we think our automatic drawings/paintings come from the subconscious, collective unconscious, pure spirit, the great mystery, God, the Daemon or the Muse, we can taste the expansive freedom of that form of expression. Relaxing the conscious mind even briefly and enlisting the "involuntary" processes is a way to infuse your art with a new richness. It might actually be the only way!
If you want to try on the hat of the Surrealist you might enjoy the Exquisite Corpse game.
ART PLAY: The Exquisite Corpse
(These instructions were originally published in 1927 in a Surrealist journal.)
Play a round with your family or friends (ideally in groups of four). Use drawings or collages or poems.
1. Fold a piece of paper into the same number of sections as there are participants.
2. Unfold the paper and start with the first player who does a spontaneous drawing in the first space, leaving slight traces of the lines extending into the next section.
3. The player then folds the paper over to hide what he or she drew. Each player continues the drawings in their successive section, taking cues from the bits of lines that their predecessor left visible.
4. When the last player has finished, the sheet is opened to reveal the full drawings.

Painting Laboratories for Creative Expansion!
This summer is a great time to try out a Muse Group. I'm experimenting with a flexible schedule this summer - mini workshops taught on Saturdays and one Sunday. You may sign up for one or all of them.
Or if you want an ongoing group, there is still one spot in the weekly Monday afternoon group starting June 3.
(courtesy of three Muse students)
Learn to paint intuitively, capturing thoughts, feelings and intuitions in a playful setting. Each session features a different mixed media painting technique which you can add to your repertoire - from textured collage to painting techniques with inks and acrylics. Meditation and writing are added to the mix to evoke that powerful Muse energy!
