I'm missing my regular weekly Monday afternoon Muse Group today.  The studio got cleared out and set up for two weekends of ARTrails Open Studios, Oct 13, 14, 20, 21.  All the collage gear, chairs and tables are put away, and bins of paintings have been moved in.  It's a gallery now for one more weekend, which hopefully will be another delightfully sunny one.

There was an almost constant stream of visitors to my studio and my husband Bob's last weekend. So thank you, if you were one of them!  The art making never feels quite complete until it is shared with others, new and old collectors and people who come to be creatively inspired.

I understand that well, being someone who is constantly attending the shows of fellow artists and gleaning ideas from them. I am enclosing a video tour here to share the show with those of you who are thinking of coming this weekend, and with the folks who live far away.

The Art Play section this month is a new wrinkle on the "old" inks and gesso lesson.  And I finally got around to putting together the student art done in the past few months to share in this issue.  Hope you can take a few minutes to get as inspired as I am by the breadth and "breath" of creative expression that unfolds in this studio of mine in Imagine With Art workshops.

Cheers,

Susan

One More ARTrails Open Studio Weekend!

Please take the 1 1/2 minute video tour of our studios!  Here's what you'll see:

My husband Bob with his luminous abstract, figurative and landscape photography. You can also preview his work on his website.

And walk down the path to visit my studio in the orchard, next to the chicken coop, filled to the brim with mixed media paintings on canvas and paper:  abstract landscapes, figurative expressions, whimsical Party Chicks and more.  I'll have my painting and collage mediums spread out along with art journal books and, of course, bird's nests collection.  My book Conversations with the Muse: The Art Journal as Inner Guide will also be available for sale.

We'll be open again this coming weekend, Oct 20 and 21, 10am-5pm.  Our address is 2550 Lewis Dr., Sebastopol, CA and you can locate us and other fine local artists and their studios on the ARTrails website. There will be signs out to help direct you on these country roads!

      ART PLAY:  Mask and Drip!

don't wait til the sun shines

The first lesson in all the Muse Groups is spontaneously painting with inks and gesso. It's a way to start out playfully and we are instantly delighted when we see the colorful inks explode onto the wetted paper and mix with other colors as we tip the paper and scrape or roller on some gesso texture.

Sometimes however, we get carried away and before long have a brownish greenish gray soup (and I don't mean split pea!) that has lost all of the color vibrancy we started out with.

In this lesson you may avoid some of this by starting out with clear contact paper and cutting out some abstract shapes.  Peel the backing off and find a pleasing pattern to stick them onto your watercolor paper, burnishing to get them stuck on as well as possible.

Now wet a big shape on your paper, or all over if you want.  Dropper on acrylic inks. Stick to two analogous colors (close on the color wheel) to begin with.  Do some tipping and dripping and blending.  Squirt on a bit of gesso, if you want, and run a scraper through it for some surface texture and blending with the inks. The area you have masked with the clear contact paper will remain white paper.

Dry your painting and rewet to go in for another transparent layer of ink.  In the above piece I droppered on black ink in the second layer, leaving plenty of unpainted surface as well.  Dry again.

Now peel off the contact paper shapes.  You can leave them white or paint them if you want.  You might try a focal point color to jazz up the color combo.  In this piece the blue complements the orange. And you can repeat those same shapes elsewhere in the piece to strength the design.

Layers of color dried in between may help to keep you out of the mud while still giving you some unexpectedly unique color vibrations. You're in for surprises of the sort that will keep you at the table playing and call you back again and again!

Video Art Gallery for Imagine With Art Students

I teach a different mixed media painting technique in each Muse Group or workshop, and then the students take me at my word and use that technique in their own sometimes quirky, sometimes refined, yet always totally original and artfully expressive way.  No wonder we get so excited, getting to share each other's discoveries.

This slide show includes a variety of lessons including crinkled Masa paper texture, adding words artfully to the page, painting with hands (next month's workshop), and this month's Art Play Mask and Drip. Enjoy watching, and contact me if you'd like to join us.

Colorful Masa Paper Textures

Learn a mixed media technique using Japanese Masa paper to create delightful textures in your water media paintings and collage.  First wetting, then crinkling the paper,  you can achieve a marbling effect in color application with watercolor, inks and fluid acrylics.  This inexpensive oriental paper with its long fibers and sizing maintains its strength when wet, and can be flattened and mounted or used as collage papers.  In this demo you will learn how to work with this fun paper, while being introduced to its creative application in an art journaling practice.
