Avoid the 'Summer Slide'

young-girl-studying.jpg According to The National Summer Learning Association, "All young people experience learning losses when they do not engage in educational activities during the summer." Research spanning 100 years shows that students typically score lower on standardized tests at the end of summer vacation than they do on the same tests at the beginning of the summer." The best way to prevent the 'summer slide,' is to engage in activities that will keep students' minds active until school starts back. Ellis Island Field Trip

Our 4th and 7th Graders embarked on a trip to the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island.  Both classes had recently learned about immigration in the United States in the late 1800's, in their Social Studies classes.  The trip began on a packed ferry boat to both landmarks that gave students the true immigrant experience.  At the Statue of Liberty, everyone climbed up to the pedestal that overlooks the Manhattan skyline as well as visit the mini-museum dedicated to the statue and immigration.  On Ellis Island, the students had the chance to see the baggage room and some artifacts, the staircase of separation and the wall of names.  Many students were able to locate family members on the wall of names or look up their relatives in the computer system.
