Happy November!

We are pleased to begin monthly informational newsletters to share updates and news!  Please feel free to forward to other interested friends, family, alumni and local community members as well or share on your Facebook page or join ours at (https://www.facebook.com/ststansacademy) , so that we can spread the news about the great happenings at St. Stans!

We have some exciting new initiatives in 2014!  Currently, we have seen a strong interest and influx of students from Long Island City. These parents have believed so strongly in the education provided by St. Stans that they banded together and hired a bus company to provide transportation to school.  We are also collecting names of current students that would like to be included in a free Department of Education bus service for Brooklyn parents to St. Stans starting in September 2014and we need 5 more students to make this happen.  Please let me know if you are interested.   Although this service isn't offered to Queens parents at this time, we have a parent subcommittee formed that is working on a grassroots level to make that Department of Education contract change!

If you would like more information on how to get involved or if you would like to add someone to our e-mail list, please email me below.

NEWS

September 2014 Afterschool Program in the Works! Due to large parent interest in either having their children watched for extended hours (2pm-6pm), or for parents that are looking for a supervised place for their children to complete homework after their extracurricular activities, St. Stans is now compiling a program open to all ages.  The program would consist of activities and homework at school, with the option to participate in the area classes such as karate, gymnastics, art, ballet, dance and more!  More details to follow!  Interested?  Contact: Diane Howells at dh@ridemss.com

STUDENT NEWS

West Point Class Trip!
The 8th grade toured the US Military Academy at West Point, NY on October 10, 2013. During the tour a St. Stan's alumni, Matthew, who is now a cadet at West Point, joined his brother, Max and classmates on our bus.  Matthew regaled the group with inside information on what it's like to be a West Point cadet.  From the Cadet's Chapel to the historic great links from the Revolutionary War, the students learned a lot and enjoyed themselves on their day at West Point.

Autobiographies!  Grade 2 demonstrated their writing skills this month by each writing their own autobiography. As an added attraction, the children made life-sized cardboard cutouts of themselves, dressed and all. Now that's a way to be creative!

EXTRACURRICULAR

GIRL SCOUTS!  Our Daisy Troop 2832 has 13 members and is the first level of Girl Scouts of America focused on Kindergarteners and First Graders. For this fall, we are learning how to be great Girl Scouts, by reciting the Girl Scout pledge and working to complete our Daisy badge. The Daisy badge consists of 12 parts called petals, and each petal has a learning activity which the girls have to master in order to earn their reward.

We have worked on 4 petals so far, and our goal is to complete 6 petals by the end of the fall term. The girls have enthusiastically been picking up trash in the streets and reminding classmates and grown-ups not to litter. We followed up by signing up our troop to join over 300 Girls Scouts in Prospect Park to help rake leaves and clean up garbage - all part of learning how to care for the environment

We have also learned how to respect ourselves and others, which we illustrated by having a local dentist come in and talk to the girls about taking care of their teeth.   And, we have discussed the importance of respecting authority, and had a retired firefighter come in to talk about being safe, listening to authority and following the laws.

New Daisies are welcome anytime!  Mrs. Feliciano and Ms. Serafin are Troop Leaders, and please email gosia806@aol.com if interested.

Art Classes - Eckford Street Studio will be offering Art After School with a 3pm pick up from St. Stan's. (Program runs 3:15-5:15; Open to grades pre-K through 5th.)  In this class, we examine works of art and unlock the ideas and processes used by the artists to create them! Students investigate a theme (such as storytelling, identity, or nature) over the course of several weeks and use what they discover in ongoing projects. A wide range of techniques are covered, including drawing, painting, sculpture and collage, and projects are designed in response to the students' interests. Young artists collaborate and make their own work, and have "open studio" time to experiment with materials of their choosing.  For more information, contact Kristin at studio@eckfordstreetstudio.com, or visit http://www.eckfordstreetstudio.com/#!art-after-school/c4xp
