18 area youth start their own business under the 2014 Summer Company entrepreneurship program

This summer, 18 youth in the Sault Ste. Marie region are trying their hand at entrepreneurship. Through the Summer Company young entrepreneur program, each participant is now operating their own business.

Funded by the Province of Ontario, Summer Company is administered in the Algoma District and Chapleau by the Sault Ste. Marie Economic Development Corporation (SSMEDC). The program provides grants and mentoring to assist students between the ages of 15 and 29 in starting a seasonal business. Read more.



 


SSMEDC releases its 2013 Annual Report
What does the SSMEDC do, and what impact does the organization have on the community? These questions are answered in the Corporation's 2013 Annual Report. Activity includes 279 jobs created or retained, along with $2.73 million in direct visitor spending, due to the SSMEDC's programs, services and special projects in 2013. Community leaders join the SSMEDC Board of Directors
A pair of longtime community volunteers and entrepreneurs have joined the SSMEDC's Board of Directors. At the Corporation's annual general meeting June 3, Terry Rainone and Brian Robertson were each elected to three-year Board terms. Also at the meeting, Board member Dennis Tatasciore retired from his position after several years of service. Read more.

 

SSM represented at the 2014 Canadian Gaming Summit
In an effort to grow the lottery and gaming sector in Sault Ste. Marie, community reps took part in the 2014 Canadian Gaming Summit in June. Hosted in Vancouver, B.C., more than 1,400 people attended this year's conference from hundreds of businesses and organizations from the national and international lottery and gaming sector. Read more.

  

 

Proposed Destination North site gets a boost
A planned waterfront attraction on the former St. Marys Paper site is now one step closer to reality. At the June 9 Council meeting, the project received a $28,000 investment from the City's Economic Diversification Fund. The investment will be used to develop a business plan to help create a "Woods & Water" attraction at the downtown property. Read more.

 

Entrepreneur Nathan Chevalier opens paralegal business
SSMEDC client Nathan Chevalier, a licensed Paralegal with the Law Society of Upper Canada, recently opened his own business, Knight Legal Solutions. The company provides a more affordable option for people who are engaged in legal matters such as landlord/tenant issues, small claims, traffic violations and other provincial offenses. Read more.  
 
  

 

Ross receives recognition re: Algoma U
Andrew Ross, General Manager of Enterprise Services for the SSMEDC, received a 2014 Alumni Achievement Award from Algoma University. A graduate of the school's Business program, Ross is a former President of the Algoma U Student Union and a Past Chair and current member of the university's Alumni Council.
