Marie was featured in the Spring edition of Bear Country, the in-flight magazine of Bearskin Airlines. The article highlights some of the many economic development opportunities in the community, including transportation infrastructure projects and growth in the post-secondary education sector. In 2012, the City's credit rating was upgraded to A+ by Standard & Poor's. TELUS Cup an economic boon for Sault Ste. Marie
Sault Ste. Marie found itself in a familiar position in April. The community hosted another major sports event, this one drawing some of the best hockey teams from across the country. The city was home to the 2013 TELUS Cup, Canada's Midget AAA Championships. The week-long tournament injected several hundred thousand dollars into the local economy. Read more.
  
  

Calling all students: Wanna be your own boss this summer?
Through the Sault Ste. Marie Economic Development Corporation, grants are available for youth to start a summer business. Funded by the Province of Ontario, Summer Company provides up to $3,000 for students to enter the field of self-employment. The deadline to sign up is May 17, though youth are encouraged to register early, as space is limited. Read more.

 

Major business matchmaking event coming to the Sault
Area companies will have a unique opportunity to expand this fall by partnering with firms from across the globe. From October 28 to 30, Sault Ste. Marie is hosting Naturallia 2013, a major business-to-business matchmaking forum. Akin to "speed-dating" for businesses, the event is expected to attract upwards of 200 global companies. CARHA World Cup nominated for Sport Event of the Year
Held in Sault Ste. Marie last March, the 2012 CARHA Hockey World Cup attracted about 2,500 visitors and was the talk of the town. It seems the event also generated considerable excitement beyond city limits. In fact, the tournament was one of three finalists for the Canadian Sport Event of the Year, an annual award from the Canadian Sport Tourism Alliance. Read more.

 

Lottery & Gaming at forefront of SSMEDC meeting with Premier
With virtually every member of the Ontario Cabinet in town in March, the SSMEDC took the opportunity to lead a roundtable meeting with Premier Kathleen Wynne, several Ministers and key community stakeholders. Discussions centred around a few critical issues, the most prominent being the future of Ontario's lottery and gaming sector and a proposed public harbour project. Read more.
  
  

Sault businesses eye
expansion in national defense sector
Every year, the Government of Canada spends billions of dollars on national defense.
With this in mind, the SSMEDC, in partnership with FedNor, recently hosted a business-to-business event related to the defense sector. During the forum, six of the country's largest prime defense contractors met with 25 local and area companies. They discussed partnership opportunities. Read more
