AVA's 2016 Annual Meeting - Join us and meet our future Executive Director! Tuesday, September 20, 6-7:30pm

All AVA members are cordially invited to our Annual Meeting on Tuesday, September 20, from 6:00 to 7:30pm. This year, as we begin preparing for our leadership transition, Bente and our newly selected Executive Director, Trip Anderson, (who officially begins on November 1, as he will overlap with Bente for one month) will both be on hand. This is the perfect venue for our cherished members to meet Trip before he begins his tenure, while at the same time he learns the Annual Meeting ropes, per se. Election of new officers and Board members will take place, and the proposed budget for fiscal year 2016-2017 will be discussed. There will also be a progress report on AVA's Sculptural Studies Building, and recent upgrades to the Carter-Kelsey Building. Please join us to learn more about the organization you so generously support! Refreshments will be served.

Kyudo: The Way of the Bow
弓道

Free Kyudo Demonstration
Friday, October 14, 6-7:30pm

"First Shot" Workshop
Saturday, October 15, 9am-4pm

Kyudo means "the way of the bow" and is an ancient form of Japanese archery. It is also a meditation practice, often referred to as "Zen archery." Practicing Kyudo involves focusing one's attention and calming one's mind for the precise drawing of the bow and release of the arrow. It is a path to opening one's heart and mind to the natural dignity of being human, beyond the obstacles of ambition, doubt, and loneliness. Hitting the target is not considered important.

"You do not practice Kyudo to polish your form. You practice Kyudo to polish your heart."-Kanjuro Sendai

A Kyudo demonstration to introduce the "First Shot" Workshop will be offered on Friday, October 14, from 6-7:30pm. We will also discuss how Kyudo as a martial art became a meditation practice. The Kyudo demonstration is free and open to the public.

Those interested in learning Kyudo can click here to sign up for the "First Shot" Workshop, a daylong practice to be held on Saturday, October 15, 9am-4pm. "First Shot" gives the beginner an opportunity to practice the Seven Coordinations (Shichido), the basic form of Kyudo as meditation. Proceeds from the "First Shot" Workshop will go to the Aya Itagaki Scholarship Fund at AVA. Adults and older teenagers are welcome to participate.

Instructors: Ray Chin, Grace DiNapoli, and Tom Kyle teach kyudo in Thetford, Barre, and Barnett, VT, respectively. All are students of Kanjuro Shibata Sensei XXI, a bow maker and kyudo master whose lineage spanned 21 generations of master bow makers.

Call for Artists: Healing With Art
Deadline: October 10

The Friends of Norris Cotton Cancer Center has issued a call for art for an exhibit to be hung in the
Norris Cotton Cancer Centers in Lebanon, Manchester, and Nashua. The exhibit is based on the belief that art contributes to and reinforces the healing process for patients who have been diagnosed with and are receiving treatment for cancer. Art also provides a benefit for caregivers who accompany the patient to treatment. This is because art provides a therapeutic refuge for those in need of finding perspective on what is happening in their lives. This exhibit is intended to offer enlightenment and encouragement to patients, families, and staff of the Cancer Centers and will hang for four months at the Centers.
