Happy March!

If you haven't had the chance to see the Best of the Upper Valley High School Exhibition, this great show is on display until March 11.

On Saturday, March 5, the high-energy artworks from the exhibit will serve as the inspiration for a free Poetry Workshop (12noon) and free Valley Improv Performance (3pm). Participants in the Poetry Workshop will be invited to read their work alongside established poets at 4:30pm on Friday, March 11 at a Poetry Reading and Closing Reception for the High School Show. We also open our display of Vintage Posters in the Johnson Sisters Library on March 10.

And space is still available in our March afterschool classes for ages 5-8, 9-12, and teens.

And last but not least, please look for AVA's 2016 Spring and Summer Brochure inserted in the

Framed Vintage Posters from the Collection of Alfred T. Quirk
March 10 - April 2

An exhibition and silent auction of vintage posters from the collection of former AVA Board Chair Alfred T. Quirk will take place in AVA's Johnson Sisters Library from March 10 through April 2. The exhibition will overlap with AVA's 2016 Silent Auction. Featuring a selection of beautifully framed classic posters, this exhibition/auction will conclude at 7:30pm on April 2 during AVA's Silent Auction Party. While no admission is charged to preview the exhibition or to make early-bird bids, there is an admission fee to attend the Silent Auction Party, when the final bidding takes place.

We extend our sincere thanks to Al Quirk, who, over the years, has so generously donated posters from his extensive collection to benefit our nonprofit organization.

Valley Improv Performance
Saturday, March 5, 3pm
Free

Since 2010, the improvisational comedy troupe Valley Improv, or Improv for short, has performed throughout the community in a variety of venues. In fact, the then fledgling troupe appeared at AVA in 2011 in a program that combined the literary, performing and visual arts. Now, Valley Improv and AVA have formed a partnership that will showcase myriad aspects of the creative process.

Improv's founder, Becky Byars of East Thetford, VT, states that her goals in forming this troupe were to create a fun family show and to establish a creative outlet for local talent. "We live life on the edge by creating comedy in the moment based exclusively on audience suggestions," says Becky, a longtime performer in children's theater and improvisational troupes nationwide.

The performance, which follows the Ekphrastic Poetry Workshop listed above, is free and open to the public. The audience is always engaged, sometimes even on stage. The comedy is fast-paced, energetic, upbeat, and family friendly. Works included in the Best of the Upper Valley High School Exhibition are certain to provide visual inspiration for the performers.

AVA's diverse programs provide dedicated and capable high school and college students the opportunity to make an essential contribution to the work we do in the community, while also gaining skills as they learn about the art world.

Camp Assistants, generally high school students passionate about the visual arts, work directly with faculty members to create exciting and memorable Summer Art Camps for children and teens. The application deadline is April 15. Click here to download the 2016 Summer Camp Assistant application.

Interns, generally college students, help in multiple ways with our education, exhibition, and community arts programs. Call for Artists and Writers: The Whitefish Review

Deadline: March 15

The Whitefish Review is a nationally-acclaimed, non-profit journal publishing the distinctive literature, art, and photography of mountain culture. In addition to a diverse mix of stories, interviews and conversations, a 16-page color art and photography section is featured with commentary from the artists and photographers.

Submissions for Whitefish Review's 19th issue, on the theme of "Change," are currently being reviewed in art, photography, fiction, non-fiction, essays, and poetry through March 15. Cristina Eisenberg is the lead editor for "Change."

Eisenberg is an ecologist, writer, and nonfiction editor of Whitefish Review. She is the Chief Scientist at Earthwatch Institute, USA based in Boston, MA. Her most recent book is "The Carnivore Way: Coexisting with and Conserving North America's Predators" (Island Press, 2014). Eisenberg is currently at work on a book about climate change.

"In this issue of Whitefish Review we explore change and all it means today. We are especially looking for submissions about how people have responded to change, both personal and global, turned challenges into inspiration, found humor in even the most difficult times, and grown in the process," says Eisenberg. "What are we doing as world citizens, artists, and scholars to adapt to and mitigate global change? What are our sources of hope? What can we say about our society's resistance to change?"

The Review editors seek stories and art that speak to a broad interpretation of the theme of "Change." Most people change jobs, partners, houses, diet, hair, college majors, and cars multiple times. Some of these changes are forced by circumstances beyond our control. Others are our way of making intuitive and creative leaps, rebelling, finding our path and our bliss, taking wild chances, shifting gears. While not all such changes are easy, many lead to very positive outcomes in our lives.
