National Trust for Historic Preservation Features AVA in a New Article

The article begins:

Adaptively reusing an old building can have benefits both tangible and intangible. Just ask Bente Torjusen, Executive Director of AVA Gallery and Art Center in Lebanon, New Hampshire.

Several years ago, the organization purchased and renovated the 1850s former H.W. Carter & Sons overalls factory and turned it into an energy-efficient art center with studios, classrooms, and exhibition space. When we talked with Torjusen about local travel ideas for the Fall 2015 issue of Preservation magazine, we found the AVA Gallery story so interesting that we asked her to elaborate on it. Excerpts from our conversation with her are below.

Call for Artists and Curators: New Art Center, MA
Deadline: January 25

The New Art Center's Curatorial Opportunity Program (COP) is an open-call curatorial platform that investigates contemporary culture through the visual arts. It makes possible diverse curatorial visions in a collaborative, non-profit and alternative exhibition space. Curators of selected group exhibitions receive a $1,000 stipend and administrative, promotional and technical support.

We host exhibitions involving two or more artists and incorporating at least one public presentation in our 2,000 square-foot gallery.

The New Art Center has a 35-year tradition of using its Main Gallery for group exhibitions curated by an independent curator. Since May 1991, we have continued this tradition through our Curatorial Opportunity Program's public call for proposals.
