Four Artists, Four Decades

Four Artists, Four Decades showcases and celebrates the work of AVA co-founder Lili Mayor.
Works by Jon Keenan, Colleen Randall, and Clifford B. West (1916-2006), each chosen by Mayor for their artistic accomplishments and their relationship to AVA, are also on display.

Focus on Film - As Art, On Art
In our 40th anniversary year, AVA is pleased to pay homage to the media of film as an integral part of the visual arts. Our new series, Focus on Film - As Art, On Art will pay special tribute to films on artists and art collectors as well as to film as a moving-image art form. To enhance the experience, each screening will be paired with a talk or panel discussion.
This film series, free and open to the public, will take place in AVA's Clifford B. West Gallery. Refreshments will be served.

Thursday, 10/3. 7-9pm
Michael R. Taylor, Director of the Hood Museum of Art at Dartmouth College, will introduce the film and discuss the role of the contemporary art collector.

Geri DeLuca, Chair of AVA's 40th Anniversary Year Events, will moderate a group discussion after the film.

Two Documentary Films with a Focus on Local Work History

Hand of Brick: Densmore Brick Company -- A Look Back (Directed by Stefan van Norden, 2013, 60 min)
Saturday, 10/19, 7-9pm
Lebanon's Densmore Brick Factory, which closed in 1976 after 170 years of production, made the bricks that contributed to the built environment of the Upper Valley, including much of Dartmouth College. Van Norden will introduce his film when it premieres at AVA; a reception will follow after the screening.

Connecting the Threads -- Overalls to Art: The H.W. Carter and Sons Factory (Directed by Kenneth C. Turino, 2013, 37 min)
Sunday, 10/27, 5-7pm
This documentary, co-produced by Historic New England, CATV, and AVA, focuses on the history of work in AVA's landmark building. This screening celebrates the film's recent accolade - The 2013 Leadership in History Award from the American Association for State and Local History.

CAOS for Toddlers, CAOS, and ART STOP!
Special Programs Have Begun!
CAOS for Toddlers (CAT), a weekly program on Friday mornings, 9:30 to 11:30am, for children 1-4 years old, has begun again. Caregivers are requested to remain with their toddlers and are expected to help with clean-up. Materials are provided, and participation is $5 per child. CAOS for Toddlers is made possible in part thanks to a grant from The Pauline Davenport Children's Fund of the Vermont Community Foundation.
CAOS (Community Arts Open Studio) has resumed on Saturdays, from 11am to 4pm. This favorite family drop-in program takes place on most Saturdays throughout the school year (please call 603-448-3117 to check the schedule during holidays). Materials are provided, and the cost is $5 per child. CAOS is supported in part by a grant from the Highfield Foundation.
ART STOP!--the free afterschool program that encourages youths in grades 5-8 to take inspiration from AVA's ongoing exhibitions to create their own drawings, paintings, and sculptures--has begun once again. Meeting weekly on Tuesdays from 2:30 to 5pm, ART STOP! is made possible through 2013 thanks to a generous grant from the Couch Family Foundation. AVA is seeking sponsorship to continue ART STOP! through the remainder of the 2013-2014 academic calendar.

You're Invited to a Celebration of AVA's Past -- And Future

Please join us for an exciting conversation about AVA's ongoing plans to best serve our community. The event begins with a screening of the documentary Connecting the Threads (see above), and will conclude with a presentation by William Dunn, AVA's Board Chair; Bente Torjusen, AVA's Executive Director; and C. Stuart White, Jr., Architect and AVA Board Member, about AVA's plans for the future.

AVA is pleased to be part of the North American Museum (NARM) program.
NARM extends your AVA membership all across North America to over 650 participating museums and galleries. You receive free admission and member benefits at gifts shops at participating museums and art centers.

LEF Foundation Free Grant Workshop for Documentary Filmmakers

The goal of the LEF Foundation's New England office is to fund the work of independent documentary film and video artists in the region, and to broaden recognition and support for their work, both locally and nationally. Through its Moving Image Fund (MIF), LEF provides funding across all phases of production, supporting films from the early risk-taking stage through a project's completion. Since its inception, MIF has supported over 200 films with approximately $3.5 million dollars in funding to New England-based filmmakers.
LEF Program Director Sara Archambault will conduct a grant workshop at the Main Street Museum on Tuesday, October 15 at 6:00pm for potential Moving Image Fund Applicants. During the workshop, participants will:
- learn about LEF's basic guidelines and requirements
- watch samples from recently funded LEF films
- hear about LEF's new online submission process
- enjoy some free snacks and conversation!
