AVA's Spring program is moving into high gear, so we write with an update about the many programs we have starting in the coming weeks.

Thank you to the Geisel School of Medicine students, seen above, who so generously donated their Saturday morning to cleaning and gardening at AVA.

Warm regards,

Congratulations Yarnbombers!

Thanks to all who participated in the creation of our most recent public art project, Yarnbomb Lebanon! It was a wonderful experience, punctuated by Liz Sauchelli's sensitively written essay in the Valley News.

The next time you're passing by Lebanon's Colburn Park (on your way to or from AVA), please stop to see the installation. It's a treat!

Greg Hemberger Sustainable Architecture Workshop for Teens
Application Deadline: MAY 15

The Second Annual Greg Hemberger Sustainable Architecture Workshop for Teens will be held the week of July 22-26, 2013.

Structured for young people with an interest in sustainable design and construction, this five-day, hands-on workshop will consist of morning sessions at AVA, led by local professionals, and afternoon visits to local architecture offices, construction companies, and LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certified buildings. The workshop will incorporate architectural design principles, free-hand drawing, model building, sustainability standards, and other pertinent topics. It will also provide students with new design skills, personal portfolio material, and an idea of whether sustainable architecture and construction is of potential career interest to them.

Participation is limited to 12 students in grades 10-12; younger students can participate with special permission from the instructor. Prospective students must complete an application to be considered for this workshop. Applications can be downloaded by clicking here, can be requested by calling (603) 448-3117, and are due by May 15. Participants will be notified by May 30. Tuition for this five-day, 40-hour workshop is $350. Scholarships are available to those who need assistance with all or part of the tuition.

Eliza McLellan, who led the program in its first year, will be returning to the Upper Valley from New York, where she works as the assistant to the Design for Risk and Reconstruction Committee at the AIA New York Center for Architecture.

This workshop was created in memory of the architect Greg Hemberger, with the support of the Greg Hemberger Memorial Fund at the New Hampshire Charitable Foundation. AVA wishes to thank June, Ben, and Gretchen Hemberger for their commitment to the continuation of this important and meaningful offering. Greg Hemberger was for years a partner at Banwell Architects, the architectural firm responsible for the renovation design of our LEED Gold-certified building.

Flock Dance Troupe
Museum Pieces II
Thursday, April 18, 6:00pm

A new dance performance by Flock Dance Troupe, choreographed by its founding director, Carol Langstaff, will take place at AVA on Thursday, April 18, at 6:00pm.

The new work, entitled Museum Pieces II, builds on Museum Pieces I, which was inspired by the works of well-known visual artists and performed at AVA in February 2012.

Of the April 18 performance, Langstaff observes: "Dance is music made visual, sculpture in motion. Dance and fine art communicate without words."

The performance will be followed by light refreshments and the opportunity to view AVA's current exhibitions.

Art Imitates Life Imitates Art: Edvard Munch, Henrik Ibsen and Hedda Gabler
A Lecture by Bente Torjusen
Presented in Partnership with the Northern New England Repertory Theatre Company
Wednesday, May 1, 5:30pm

The work of two Norwegian masters--playwright, theater director and poet Henrik Ibsen (1828 -1906) and painter and printmaker Edvard Munch (1863-1944)--at times intersected in dynamic and dramatic ways. A number of Ibsen's dramas inspired Munch's art, and one of Munch's paintings likely inspired Ibsen's last play, When We Dead Awaken.

Now, in concert with Northern New England Repertory Theatre Company staging of Ibsen's powerful drama Hedda Gabler* at Colby-Sawyer College (May 30-June 8), AVA's Executive Director Bente Torjusen will give a talk focusing on the fascinating interplay between the work of these two artists. The talk will expand upon how the notorious Hedda Gabler, as well as protagonists from other Ibsen dramas, resonated with Munch's life and art.

Excerpts from Hedda Gabler will be presented by actors Grant Neale and Lee Anne Hutchinson, who will be starring in Shaker Bridge Theater's North Shore Fish from April 19 - May 5.

*"Hedda Gabler (Rudall, transl.)" is produced by special arrangement with Samuel French, Inc.

Tickets for Hedda Gabler at the Sawyer Center Theater are available beginning April 1: (603) 526-4112. AVA members will receive a $5 discount on tickets to Hedda Gabler.

Nelson Rockefeller: The Art Collector

A lecture by Mary Louise Pierson

Thursday, May 2, 5:30pm

In this illustrated lecture, Mary Louise Pierson will offer a personal perspective on her grandfather, Nelson Rockefeller, and his impact as an art collector.

Nelson Rockefeller was deeply influenced by his mother, Abby Aldrich Rockefeller-the founder of the Museum of Modern Art. He became one of the most prominent collectors of modern art in the 20th century and forged friendships with many well-known artists, including Picasso, Calder, Matisse and Nevelson. He also founded the Museum of Primitive Art; the collection is now in the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

Mary Louise Pierson is a painter and photographer and a graduate of Rhode Island School of Design. Her photographs have been published in The Rockefeller Family Home: Kykuit (1997), co-authored with her mother, Ann Roberts, as well as in Mr. Rockefeller's Roads, which features images of Acadia National Park. Mary Louise, who is currently working on a series of paintings for an exhibit in New York, is a longtime AVA member; her work has been shown at AVA in both solo- and group shows.

Call for Artists: Exhibit Your Sculpture in Kira's Garden
Deadline: May 6

Kira's Garden, the beautiful sculpture garden by the east entrance of AVA's Carter-Kelsey building, given in memory of Kira Fournier Schore (1950-2002) by her husband, Ben Schore, was inaugurated in 2008.

The sculpture garden features both permanent and temporary installations. On permanent display is one of Kira's bronze sculptures, "Split," a reclining female figure on a black granite plinth, adjacent to a bench of the same material. In addition, granite slabs have been placed throughout the garden to serve as bases for temporary sculpture installations. Among the sculptures that have been displayed are works by Herb Ferris, Dimitri Gerakaris, Sue Katz and Li Shen.

AVA is now accepting proposals for another round of sculptures for temporary display in Kira's Garden. Artists are encouraged to submit proposals for work that fits the context of the site; durability as well as the safety of the visiting public, including children, will be important considerations. There will be an opening reception in late June for the new work in Kira's Garden; the selected sculptures will be on display for a year, unless sold.

Click here to download the submissions proposal. Further information is also available by calling AVA at (603) 448-3117. Proposals must be received by May 6.

Call for Entries: UNBOUND III
Deadline: June 15

Presented by ArtisTree Gallery and Pentangle Arts Council, and in conjunction with Bookstock Festival in Woodstock, VT. UNBOUND III is the 3rd annual juried exhibit of unique works of art using 'the book" as a material or format.

The broad theme of "UNBOUND~VOL III" encompasses all of the possibilities of what we may think or may not think a "book" is. Is it story? An entry to another world? An exploration? What does it indicate? This juried show looks to explore these ideas of "the book" and all the ways artists use its format as a stepping off point or as a material to explore new ideas.

Open to all 2D and 3D, installation, and assemblage artists who are working in New England or New York. Cash Prizes.
