Remembering Cornelia: Photographs by
Cornelia M. Rahmelow (1943-2012)
July 20 - August 24
Opening Reception: Friday, July 20, 5:00-7:00pm

Please join us in the Johnson Sisters Library, on the second floor, to see an exhibition of photographs by Cornelia M. Rahmelow.

Cornelia M. Rahmelow was born on January 20, 1943 in Mannheim, Germany. She received her schooling at the Rudolf-Steiner-Schule Hamburg, a Waldorf school. She was trained as a photographer in Hamburg and London, obtaining formal certification as a journeyman. She was especially noted for her portrait photography and credited her Waldorf education with influencing her strong sense of color, light and form. These influences were enhanced during a three-year photographer's apprenticeship served in her native Germany, during which she mastered the discipline necessary to manipulate light in order to give a surface texture, shape and depth.

Rahmelow, who immigrated to the United States in 1968, moved to Hanover, NH, in 1974. Closely connected with AVA Gallery and Art Center, her photos were frequently exhibited in group shows, and she was a loyal and active volunteer. When AVA moved from Hanover to Lebanon in 1990, Rahmelow was one of the first artists to rent a studio in the 11 Bank Street building.

Guided Tours of the Marion Carter House
July 4, 1:00-4:00pm

The beautiful Marion Carter House, situated next to AVA, on the corner of Bank Street and Campbell Street, is open only infrequently to the public. One such rare opportunity will take place on July 4th from 1:00 to 4:00pm when members of the Lebanon Historical Society will be on hand to give free tours to the public.

Marion Carter, who died in 1961, was a granddaughter of Henry Wood Carter, the founder of H.W. Carter & Sons, the overall factory at 11 Bank Street which now is the home of AVA Gallery and Art Center.

A charter member of Lebanon Historical Society, Marion Carter, who died in 1961, left her home as a private trust to be used by organizations she helped to fund, and by other organizations benefiting the community.

The house was designed in 1848 for Henry R. Campbell (the design engineer for the Northern Railroad) by the noted Lebanon-born architect Ammi Burnham Young. Some ten years later, it was sold to Henry W. Carter. After a damaging fire in 1885, the house was redesigned in the new and popular "Queen Anne Revival" style.

The Carters named this house "Lion House"; the Carter lions can still be seen in front of the house facing Campbell Street.

Emergency Fellowship, The Artists' Fellowship, Inc.

The Artists' Fellowship, Inc. is a private, charitable foundation that assists professional fine artists (painters, graphic artists, sculptors) and their families in times of emergency, disability, or bereavement. The Artists' Fellowship's Board of Trustees and Officers all serve as volunteers in service to our community of artists. Assistance is given without expectation of repayment. One does not need to be a Member of the Fellowship to receive assistance; neither does membership in the Artists' Fellowship entitle one to assistance from the foundation. It cannot aid every artist who applies, nor does it award scholarship funds or "fellowships" for study, projects, art supplies, schooling, travel, or exhibitions.

Construction on Bank Street Continues...

The City of Lebanon continues its improvements to Bank Street, and their work currently has them directly in front of AVA.

Please plan an extra bit of time when you come to our classes, camps, and exhibitions.

Thank you.
