Hardwiring Happiness
3 Good Things
Written by Janneke Sobeck, Director of Live Well Winona

"The brain takes its shape from what the mind rests on."

Rick Hanson, Hardwiring Happiness

I had the privilege of attending a fabulous, glamorous, fun, and motivating event last week called Sparkle, hosted by Winona Health. In addition to delicious sparkly cupcakes and entertaining speakers, a program was featured titled 'Three Good Things.' Participants are encouraged to recall and write down three positive things from their day, ideally right before going to sleep. This is because we tend to focus on the negative in life, but the good news is that our brains can be re-trained to focus on the positive! Results have shown that after two weeks participants experience increased happiness, decreased burnout, less conflict, better quality of sleep, improved eating habits, and better work/life balance. So whip out a pad of paper or a post-it note and take the two week challenge!

If you'd like to schedule a presentation about this fascinating program, contact Ann MacDonald, Director of Training & Development, Winona Health, at 507-474-3127.
To Age Well, Change How You Feel About Aging
Wall Street Journal
Written by Anne Tergesen, Wall Street Journal, October 19, 2015

Scientists are discovering something very peculiar about aging: How we feel about getting old matters. A lot.

In test after test, researchers are finding that if we think about getting older in terms of decline or disability, our health likely will suffer. If, on the other hand, we see aging in terms of opportunity and growth, our bodies respond in kind.

That research holds out the possibility for much healthier aging. But it also points to a very big obstacle: Negative stereotypes about aging are pervasive in America. Even many older adults embrace the idea that getting old is a bad thing-which means they're doing potentially serious harm to their health without realizing it.
