Positive Psychology

Written by Emily Weber, Intern, Live Well Winona

Dr. Martin E.P. Seligman co-founded the field of positive psychology, and has devoted his career since then to furthering the study of positive emotion, positive character traits, and positive institutions. Positive psychology is the study of strengths that enable individuals to thrive and focuses on the idea that people want to live meaningful and fulfilling lives. It emphasizes building what's strong, rather than fixing what's wrong according to Dr. Seligman.

Although positive psychology is sometimes regarded as merely happy talk, its techniques have been proven to provide a much needed balance and supplement to the traditional focus of medical care. A novice to the field of positive psychology can begin with simple daily tasks to improve their overall well being. For example one can identify their top five strengths and try to use them throughout the day. Another method is writing down three good things that happened during your day every evening. Finally, showing others your gratitude by writing them a letter or sharing your thanks in person is another method.

Overall, positive psychology encourages individuals to gravitate towards the positives in life rather than the negatives, to develop an encouraging and uplifting environment, and to build strategies that foster hope.
