Take The Stairs...To Garvin Heights Look Out

By: Ken Mogren, Live Well Winona Vice-Chair of the Board

For quite some time, I've known about the walking path/ stairs to Garvin heights, but until recently
a few years ago, I'd never climbed the bluff that way. Some guests from out of town looking to get a little exercise and a bird's eye view of Winona gave me a good reason to check it out. And WOW, it's another item to add to the list of Winona's many treasures.

The path starts just east of the road up to Garvin Heights. It's well marked by a sign. You can park along Lake Boulevard. There's also a nice parking area about a block away, just west of the intersection of Huff Street and Lake Boulevard. The climb starts with a short set of steps that lead to a walking path. You walk a few minutes on the path which isn't particularly steep, then come to the stairs.

We marveled at the amount of work it must have taken to build the stairs. They are several feet wide, made of well packed dirt and gravel plus large, flat stones, framed by sturdy landscaping timbers. With each step you gain about one foot of elevation. Since the top of the bluff is several hundred feet higher than Lake Winona, there are lots of steps !

If the hike gets you huffing and puffing, there are some well placed benches along the way. Even if you don't need a break, it's worth stopping just to soak in the sights. Hats off to whoever had the job of getting the concrete to these areas for the slabs on which the benches sit.

Your reward at the top is a stunning view of Winona from the look out. There's hardly anywhere as scenic as Winona when dressed in fall colors, and a great way to take it all in before the leaves are gone would be a hike up the bluff on this wonderful path.

What Can I Pack for My Child's After School Snack?

Our last newsletter prompted a request from a parent looking for healthy energy boosting snacks for children who have after school activities.  So we asked Jennifer Hackbarth, RD, LD from Winona Hy-Vee for her input, and this is what she told us.

"This mother is absolutely correct with stating that her kids need a snack to give them the energy for after school activities. This is challenging when refrigeration is not an option. Here is a list of items that are offered at Hy-Vee. Some better than others, but anything is better than nothing.  As always, I am available to help this mother navigate the aisles of Hy-Vee and pick out which foods would be most fitting for her child.

When picking a snack it is best to get a variety of foods to provide a balanced diet. Try to pair a carbohydrate with protein/fiber. The carbohydrate satisfies their hunger and gives them quick energy. The protein is great for muscle growth and repair and the fiber will help keep them full until their evening meal."

Mix together ready-to-eat cereal, dried fruit and nuts in a sandwich bag for an on-the-go snack.

"Let us be grateful to people who make us happy; they are the charming gardeners who make our souls blossom." ~ Marcel Proust

We want to thank the hundreds of people that are expressing their support for Live Well Winona through our Community Challenge fundraiser that kicks off this Saturday. This includes 23 amazing businesses and organizations that have formed teams, over 70 individuals that signed up for the Mud Run, dozens of selfless volunteers that will provide event support, and 6 generous sponsors.  All of these "charming gardeners" are helping the community blossom through their generosity, and for that we are very grateful!
