LWW Wellness Wisdom
My Muddy Motivation 2013
Written By Beth Rose, RN, MSN, MAAT, St. Anne Winona

Being new to St Anne's I was easily lured to take the challenge of starting the list of participants for the Mud Run. I thought it a good chance to get to know my co-workers. We were all very enthusiastically encouraged to partake by our very own Wellness Director. We were a medley of 21 humans of varying sizes, ages, and abilities. We were a hodgepodge of staff members from many parts of St Anne's multiple work areas - RN's, Nursing Assistants, Finance, Culinary, Therapies, Social Work, Pastoral Care, Unit Assistants, etc.

For anyone who is familiar with St Anne's, the core values of hospitality, stewardship, respect, and justice are nothing new. And they were very evident on this muddy day. There was a sense of community while allowing each person their individual uniqueness (hospitality).  There was stewardship in the very acts of teamwork and use of human resources. No one was left behind. There was a helping hand reaching out at every muddy challenge. Respect was so evident around each slippery corner, up every hill, and over/under/through/around every hurdle. I personally felt the dignity and reverence as evidenced by our team being present and waiting as the last 2 "runners" crested the last hill to embark onto the last challenge - the Mud Slide! And as these last 2 crossed the finish line the cheers were as present as they were for the earlier finishers. All of the above leads to a promotion of respectful working relationships - justice.

Is Winona the way to Wellville?

Article Content provided by: Marcia Ratliff - Winona Daily News July, 28, 2014

How do you create a healthier world?  That's the question Esther Dyson, a technology and health investor and founder of Health Initiative Coordinating Council, or HICCup, is asking communities across the U.S. - including Winona.  To answer the question she designed a challenge called the Way to Wellville, in which five communities will concentrate on interacting programs to address five metrics of health.  Winona is one of 10 finalists for the challenge, and an evaluation team visited  the community July 28th to determine if the city will make the final cut.
If Winona earns a spot on the Way to Wellville, the community will receive guidance, support, and a friendly spirit of competition to improve wellness. The challenge will last five years and hopefully create a blueprint for future initiatives across the country. Part of the Way to Wellville's plan of operations is to make health statistics accessible to everyone - like a checkup where the entire community knows its blood pressure.  Deb McClellan, Community Wellness Operations Manager at Live Well Winona, said those statistics will allow community leaders to assess need and impact, also providing an opportunity for innovation.  Community Wellness Director Janneke Sobeck said she believes the challenge, will bring health and wellness to the forefront of discussion across the city.  "It permeates the community," she said. "That message is going to be everywhere."

What Are You Doing August 13th, 14th and 16th?
Picture from Goodview Gallop Facebook page
Please check your calendars! Are you free the morning of August 16th? The Goodview Gallop 5k and 10k are fun events for everyone; those who like to compete, those that want to get some exercise with co-workers, friends and family, and those that are cancer survivors or are participating to honor or remember a loved one with cancer. If you aren't participating in the Goodview Gallop, please consider helping out as a volunteer. There are several jobs for the 10k course that could use your help, ranging from assisting at the registration table, course safety, or at a water station.  While you're checking, see if you are available on the 13th for packet stuffing or the 14th for course marking.  Any time you can offer is greatly appreciated.  Sign up is easy, just click here.
