Nutrition Article: February is Heart Health Month!

During the month of February, the American Heart Association focuses their efforts on raising awareness of heart disease and its prevention. Heart disease, stroke and other cardiovascular diseases affect a large amount of of Americans, causing 2,150 deaths every day.

Sustaining excess weight increases the heart's work. It raises blood pressure, blood cholesterol and triglyceride levels which can also increase one's risk of developing diabetes.

One of the American Heart Association's recommendations to reduce the risk of heart disease is to maintain a healthy weight. Benefits of a healthy weight go beyond just having an increased amount of energy and looser clothes.

RSVP is one of the largest volunteer networks in the nation for people 55 and over. You can use the skills and talents you've learned over the years, or develop new ones while serving in a variety of volunteer activities within your community.

RSVP volunteers choose how, where, and how often they want to serve, with commitments ranging from a few hours to 40 hours per week.

Benefits for volunteers include free supplemental accident and liability insurance coverage, travel reimbursement, and assistance in choosing volunteer opportunities.

Making a Difference Award: WAPS School Nutrition

For the second year in a row the Winona Area Public Schools lunch menu is getting a mini-makeover! School Nutrition Director Lyn Halvorson is all about incorporating new ideas for students when it comes to nutrition, exemplified through programs like Tasty Tuesdays, the Garden Spot, MyPlate menu display boards, and Feed the Kids Fund.

In collaboration with Live Well Winona, Winona State University, and Winona Hy-Vee, WAPS is rolling out their second annual Healthy Lunchtime Challenge, and they need YOUR help! Submit a fruit-themed side-dish recipe to be considered for the 2014-2015 school lunch menu. Deadline is February 24th. Contest rules can be found here. Winner receives bragging rights, $25 gift card to Ground Round, and will have their recipe appear in the school lunch menu!

Date Night: Masonic Temple Extravaganza

Looking for a fun date night idea this winter? Friday February 21st at 8pm the Masonic Temple will be hosting a fundraiser concert to help keep Live at the Levee alive. Tickets are only $20 if you purchase them at LiveAtTheLevee.com or Chapter 2 Books at 121 West 3rd St in Winona. Tickets are $25 at the door. Listen to music by The Bills, an extraordinary quintet all the way from the beautiful West Coast of Canada. With World-class credentials in folk/roots, jazz, classical and world music, The Bills are quite an amazing acoustic music super group. Also appearing will be Ruth Moody of the Wailin' Jennys. Ruth is a two-time Juno Award winning singer songwriting from Winnipeg, Manitoba. Make this date night one to remember.
