Taking back your table

Article by Stacey Sadowski, MS, RD, LD

E-mail, E-reading, text messaging, and watching television are just a couple of the ways our current society stays "plugged in" at all times.  For many families being continually "plugged in" continues during meal time as well, taking the place of even simple conversation.

According to the American Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, watching television during meal time can:

  • increase the amount of  non-nutritious food taken in, increasing the risk for obesity
  • decrease the amount of fruits and vegetables consumed
  • decrease social engagement with family, which can lessen relationship building
