Rabbi Rosen on Tikkun Olam
If there is one word that almost every Jew knows it is the term "Tikkun Olam." Often translated as "repair of the world," we see how commonly the idea is invoked to describe a wide range of deeds that Jews believe are beneficial to society or individuals. Tikkun Olam is so popular that many non-Jews have adopted the phrase as well.
Nothing is as basic and clear as the Jewish mission to stand up for the oppressed, to feel the sting of the vulnerable, and to strive to make a difference in the lives of those who suffer. In this issue of Beth El E-Learning you will find some very moving descriptions of moments of awakening and conscience.

Our Jewish Sages observe that while one generally obtains much knowledge from teachers, often one learns more from students. From my students, I have gleaned a valuable lesson on Jewish volunteerism and "Tikkun Olam"-Repair Of The World. Recently, I began teaching fourth and fifth graders in the Beth El Temple Religious School after taking a three-year hiatus from teaching in supplemental Jewish educational settings since my first teaching appointment in this setting in the early 1980s. Q&A With "The Money Coach"
A conversation with Jim Goldman
Every Wednesday, Beth El Temple member, Jim Goldman, gets ready for work...his volunteer work, that is, as the Money Coach at Jewish Family Services in West Hartford, and Gifts of Love in Avon. Goldman, a Senior Vice President - Financial Advisor, and Certified Financial Planner (CFP®), has been in the investment industry since 1988. And with the blessing and support of his employer, RBC Wealth Management, Jim has been able to turn his vocation into a personally fulfilling volunteer experience as he dedicates one full day per week to helping people with financial difficulties in the Greater Hartford area.

Nourishing My Soul
By Myra Kleinman
It's been almost a year since I retired from a very busy internal medicine practice which occupied my time and my life for several years. I loved my practice, but for all good reasons (a prime motivation being the birth of our first grandchild) I elected to retire at the beginning of 2014. I viewed retirement as an opportunity to not
only resume past interests and hobbies, but also to volunteer in ongoing activities.
My retirement is my "Happiness Project"; it is a gift and a privilege. I've made certain that my days are active and fulfilling and remain open to new possibilities. My focus in volunteering was to help others and to nourish my soul. So in January 2014, I set out on this next phase of my life.

In the words of the author, Tikkun Olam "...is fascinating both in its endurance and in its capacity to change meanings..." In this piece, Rabbi Jill Jacobs discusses popular contemporary usage, along with the four classical definitions of Tikkun Olam. Finally, she brings it all together by marrying the classical notions with the contemporary. We invite you to expand your understanding of this multifarious concept. (from Zeek.net)
